Game Informer's 14-page exclusive crashed its own website as Rockstar revealed GTA 6's Leonida: a map twice the size of GTA 5 with simulated hurricanes, 170+ animal species, localized weather, and a northern Florida region. November 19 launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Rockstar's GTA 6 Is Twice the Size of GTA 5 — Game Informer's Exclusive Reveals Hurricanes, 170+ Wildlife Species, and Leonida's Full Scope

The Short Version

Seven weeks before launch, Rockstar finally lifted the curtain on what makes Grand Theft Auto VI's Leonida tick — and it's a lot. On September 29, Game Informer published a 14-page cover story written by Marcus Stewart, a South Florida native who spent time with five senior Rockstar leads. The piece landed with enough force to crash Game Informer's website and app when traffic surged the moment it went live.

The new details are substantial: Leonida is twice the size of GTA 5's map, tropical storms and hurricanes can hit the world in real time, more than 170 animal species roam the land and water, and a full northern region — logging towns, mud-bogging events, demolition derbies — was shown for the first time. GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026, exclusively on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

About Rockstar Games

Rockstar Games has shipped the two most technically ambitious open-world games of their respective generations: GTA 5 (2013) and Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018). Both redefined what open-world density and ecosystem simulation could look like. RDR2's wildlife AI — tracking, hunting, animal behavior — became the framework GTA 6 is now building on at an even greater scale.

Rockstar North co-studio head Aaron Garbut addressed the weight of those expectations in Game Informer:

“

"The pressure for us on this project is huge. We dealt with that by doing our best to over-deliver. Normally you compromise scale for detail or detail for interaction, but with this project we went the other way — everything is dialled up — detail, scope, breadth, scale, interaction, and density. I don't think we have ever created anything close to this before." — Aaron Garbut, Game Informer / GamingBolt

Leonida: Florida at Double Scale

Leonida is a state-sized fictional Florida. Aaron Garbut confirmed it's twice the area of GTA 5's San Andreas map — the largest Rockstar has ever built. Vice City (the Miami stand-in) sits at its southern end; the game's story takes protagonists Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos across the entire state.

Game Informer's cover story introduced the northern region for the first time: an area modeled after Panama City, Jacksonville, Ocala, and the smaller towns in between. Paul MacPherson, who leads Rockstar's environment artists, described it as a deliberate contrast to Vice City's coastal glamour.

TypeDetails

Gated communities with airstripsPrivate jet owners, isolated enclaves
Mud-bogging partyOpen to any two- or four-wheel vehicle
Demolition derby tracksNight events on lit oval tracks
Bass fishing lakesCypress trees, Spanish moss, live oaks
ATV/motocross trailsCoastal dunes and forest paths

Stewart asked Rockstar directly whether the map includes equivalents to Orlando's theme parks or Cape Canaveral. MacPherson deflected: "while we may not have those exact locations," everything is built to deliver the full Florida experience. It's not a denial — just a tease.

Hurricanes and a Rebuilt Weather Engine

VP of art for lighting and rendering Owen Shepherd said the weather system was rebuilt from the ground up:

“

"We have re-engineered our weather system to make everything much more localized and persistent. The world features new fully dynamic cloudscapes that roll across the map." — Owen Shepherd, Game Informer

In practice, that means weather can differ across Leonida simultaneously — you could stand in sunshine and watch a storm hit another part of the map. Clouds range from "the clear blue of a Miami winter" to towering afternoon thunderheads. After rain, puddles linger, the ground stays wet, and rainbows appear.

Shepherd described what a full hurricane looks like:

“

"Heavy clouds, strong winds, dense atmospherics and a lot of rain combine so that everything is dripping wet, water is gushing off roof edges and lampposts, thunder rumbles and flashes of lightning light up the clouds dramatically." — Owen Shepherd, Game Informer

Rockstar has not confirmed how often hurricanes occur or whether they intersect with story missions.

170+ Wildlife Species — RDR2's Ecosystem Thinking, Scaled Up

GTA 6 — wildlife and ecosystem
GTA 6 — wildlife and ecosystem

GTA 6 ships with more than 170 animal species — over 60 birds, more than 30 land mammals, plus fish, reptiles, and sea life. Many species have never appeared in a Rockstar game before.

Art team's Michael Kane confirmed specific animals: manatees, flamingos, pelicans, alligators on land and in water. At sea: multiple shark species, whales, rays, turtles, and jellyfish, each with distinct movement patterns.

Florida's invasive species are also represented — true to life and presumably still a nuisance: green iguanas, feral cats, cane toads, nine-banded armadillos, and rhesus macaques.

Fur and feather rendering has been reworked. Fur is simulated independently — it gets wet, dirty, and matted. Animals of the same species vary in color and coat. The game builds on RDR2's tracking system: animals are classified as Rare, Discoverable, or Legendary, but Rockstar isn't revealing which animals fall into which tier.

Activities Across Leonida

Beyond its world simulation, Leonida is dense with things to do. Game Informer confirmed the following:

CategoryActivities
Extreme / motorsportBase jumping, street racing, off-road racing, motocross
WaterKayaking, scuba diving, airboating, jet skiing
Sport / leisureBilliards, mini golf, golf course, bass fishing
Fitness / socialGyms, zoo visits, hiking
EventsMud bogging, demolition derbies

Notably, Jason and Lucia can engage in date activities together — hiking was cited as one example, pointing to a relationship system woven into how you spend time in the open world.

✦

NPCs: The Most Diverse in the Series

Rockstar assembled a dedicated Los Angeles team just to write NPC dialogue. The physical diversity goes further than any prior game:

  • ▶Body types: Height, build, musculature, chest, stomach, and proportions all vary per NPC
  • ▶Skin: Freckles, moles, tan lines — individualized
  • ▶Tattoos: Matched to Leonida's regional communities; "a crazy amount of attention" per Kane
  • ▶Hairstyles: More ethnic variety than prior entries
  • ▶Clothing: Area- and person-specific, with detailed treatment of culturally significant items — sneakers, watches, sunglasses, hats
✦

Revisiting the Core Mechanics

The Game Informer piece recapped several systems covered in Rockstar's August extended showcase:

  • ▶Jason and Lucia can remain partners or become a couple; the relationship evolves with the story
  • ▶Access to some missions depends on how much money the protagonists are earning
  • ▶Wanted levels return to six stars; police remember descriptions, so changing clothes and vehicles aids escape
  • ▶Expensive cars require tools to steal; the WAiNK app shows a car's security level and fence value
  • ▶The RydeMe rideshare app provides quick transport across Leonida
✦

Why This Matters Now

GTA 6 launches 49 days from today — November 19, right before the holiday shopping window. The timing of Game Informer's feature, with its site-crashing traffic surge, signals that consumer attention is already at maximum. For comparison, GTA 5 was the fastest entertainment product ever to reach $1 billion in revenue when it launched in 2013.

An indie developer CEO made waves this week by pointing out that Rockstar would need to sell a copy to every single PS5 and Xbox Series X/S owner just to hit a 5x return on investment — illustrating the scale Rockstar is operating at. Whether GTA 6 lives up to that ambition becomes clear on November 19.

✦

How to Buy

GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. No PC release has been announced; GTA 5 didn't arrive on PC until over two years after its console debut, and Rockstar has given no indication GTA 6 will move faster.

Physical editions exist, but Rockstar previously confirmed they contain download codes rather than physical discs — a precaution against pre-release leaks.

  • ▶PS5: Available via PlayStation Store and physical retail
  • ▶Xbox: Available via Microsoft Store and physical retail
  • ▶Xbox Game Pass: Day-one inclusion unconfirmed
