The Short Version
At Minecraft LIVE 2026 — held at TwitchCon on September 26 — Mojang made the kind of announcements that don't come around often:
- 1Ice Caves, the next Holiday Game Drop for Java and Bedrock Edition, is coming this winter. New biome. New mob. New mechanics.
- 2The Sift, a brand-new Minecraft dimension, is confirmed for Java and Bedrock Edition in 2027 — the first dimension added since The End debuted over fourteen years ago.
- 3Minecraft Dungeons II launches in two days, on September 29, and you can experience The Sift dimension there first.

Ice Caves: What's Coming in the Holiday Drop

The Ice Caves are the next Game Drop for the base Minecraft game (Java and Bedrock Edition), revealed for the first time at LIVE 2026. In Mojang's words: "Though they may be beautiful, these caves are far from safe."
The Biome
Ice Caves generate underground beneath cold biomes — the same tier as dripstone caves, lush caves, and sulfur caves. They're rare, and intentional: Mojang framed them as a reward for spelunking in biomes players might otherwise skip.
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Icicles | Grow naturally from ceilings. Aesthetic and structurally useful |
| Ice Crystals | Grow from the floor; can be placed vertically or horizontally. Emit a soft glow — usable as a light source |
| Calcite | Generates abundantly in Ice Caves |
| Feel | Cold, beautiful, layered visual variety — deliberately hostile |
The Frozen Zombie
The Game Drop's new hostile mob hasn't been officially named yet (one Mojang writer suggested "Brrrombie," still pending), but its mechanics are fully detailed:
| Mechanic | Effect |
|---|---|
| Melee attack | Standard damage + stacking Freezing Effect |
| Ranged attack | Throws Ice Balls — knockback + damage |
| Conversion | Normal Zombies exposed to Powder Snow convert into Frozen Zombies |
| Death drop | Ice Balls — throwable as weapons, or brewed into a new freeze potion |
This matters beyond novelty. Zombies have never had a ranged attack. Husks already convert to regular Zombies; Frozen Zombies add a third tier to that conversion chain, opening new doors for mob farm design.
The Ice Caves drop is scheduled for this winter — no specific date announced.
The Sift: Minecraft's Fourth Dimension

Here's the headline: Minecraft is getting a new dimension for the first time in over fourteen years.
The three dimensions that have existed since 2011:
- ▶The Overworld — the main world
- ▶The Nether — underground dimension, added in Beta 1.6
- ▶The End — home of the Ender Dragon, added in Beta 1.9
The Sift becomes the fourth, and the first to be added since The End's debut.
What We Know About The Sift
Mojang was deliberately selective about what it showed. What's confirmed:
| Element | Status |
|---|---|
| Name | The Sift |
| Access | Via Rifts — cracks that appear randomly in the Overworld |
| Known areas | The Meadow, The Carapace |
| Atmosphere | Vibrant, otherworldly, "teeming with souls" |
| New mob | At least one new mob briefly glimpsed in base-game footage; name not revealed |
| Java/Bedrock ETA | 2027 |
The Sift will first be fully playable in Minecraft Dungeons II, out September 29. Mojang confirmed at LIVE that it will also come to base Minecraft — Java and Bedrock — the following year.
This is a meaningful distinction. Dungeons II and base Minecraft are separate games. The Sift in Dungeons II is built for that game's dungeon-crawler format; the Java/Bedrock version will presumably be redesigned for survival-mode exploration. Mojang hasn't detailed those differences yet.
Why This Is a Bigger Deal Than It Sounds
The Nether and The End were added during Minecraft's pre-release beta phase, when the game was still shaped by rapid weekly updates. Since 1.0 launched in 2011, nothing has touched the dimension count. The game has received biomes, mobs, mechanics, and block types — but never a dimension.
Announcing The Sift for base Minecraft is Mojang signaling that the foundational structure of the game is still in motion, fourteen years in.
Minecraft Dungeons II: September 29, Two Days Away
The Sift's public debut is Dungeons II, launching September 29, 2026. Key facts for anyone still deciding:
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Developer | Mojang Studios, Double Eleven |
| Publisher | Xbox Game Studios |
| Price | Standard $29.99 / Deluxe $49.99 |
| Xbox Game Pass | Day One — included in all Game Pass tiers |
| Platforms | PC (Steam / Epic), Xbox Series X|S, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2 |
| Co-op | Up to 4 players |
Dungeons II introduces an interconnected open world, replacing the level-select structure of the original. Rifts appear throughout the Overworld; stumbling into one sends you to The Sift. The sequel is designed around discovery and momentum rather than discrete mission runs.

Creator Platform: Lowering the Barrier
Jens Bergenström, Mojang's Chief Creative Officer, outlined a long-term vision for helping more players build and share their own Minecraft content. The goal, as he put it at LIVE, is to "inspire and enable new generations of Minecraft creators."
The practical direction: improved tools for building, managing, and distributing custom worlds and content — targeting players who want to create but don't have a technical background. Specific features weren't announced; Mojang positioned this as a multi-year initiative rather than a single release.
Minecraft World at Chessington: 2027
For UK-based readers, Minecraft is also going physical. Minecraft World opens in 2027 at Chessington World of Adventures Resort in London, in partnership with Merlin Entertainments:
- ▶Minecraft World Hotel — world's first official Minecraft hotel; themed rooms, deep-sea dining area, mob character experiences
- ▶Escape the Nether — world's first Minecraft rollercoaster, indoor and outdoor sections
Not announced: pricing, booking windows, or whether the Frozen Zombie will be represented in any capacity.
Community Reception
The reaction to "new dimension confirmed" was predictably large. Fourteen years of the same three dimensions has been a standing community wish — Mojang has fielded dimension suggestions through every development cycle. Confirming The Sift for base Minecraft legitimizes years of fan requests and signals something more ambitious than a standard content update.
The Ice Caves announcement was received more quietly, but practically — the Frozen Zombie's ranged attack genuinely changes underground survival routing, and the ice crystal light-source mechanic gives builders a new palette option for cold-themed structures.
Mojang continues collecting player feedback at feedback.minecraft.net.
