GTA 6's $400 Collector's Edition Has No Game — Fans 3D Print the Alligator in Under 24 Hours

Rockstar's $399.99 'Goodtime State Vice City Collection' for GTA 6 contains Oakley sunglasses and a cartoon alligator figure — but not the actual game. The internet responded by producing a free 3D printable version of the mascot before the week was out.

GTA 6's $400 Collector's Edition Has No Game — Fans 3D Print the Alligator in Under 24 Hours

What Happened

On September 24, 2026, Rockstar Games announced the Goodtime State Vice City Collection — GTA 6's official collector's edition — priced at $399.99. It ships November 19, the same day GTA 6 launches. It does not include the game.

Within hours, the reactions ranged from disbelief to dark humor. By September 25, at least one fan had fully modeled the collection's centerpiece — a cartoon alligator figure named Macca — and uploaded the file for anyone to print at home, for whatever they want to pay.

What's Actually in the Box

Rockstar confirmed the collection contains the following items, all themed around the fictional state of Leonida from GTA 6:

ItemNotes
Macca the Alligator figureCartoon mascot from a fictional in-game TV show set in Leonida
Stickers and pin badgesLeonida and Vice City branding
First souvenir map of LeonidaOfficial GTA 6 setting map, described as an exclusive first
Branded capVice City logo hat
Oakley sunglassesThe highest-cost item; co-branded eyewear collab

Rockstar explicitly noted the game is sold separately. Shipping is also charged separately — the collection does not qualify for free shipping.

The 3D Print Counterattack

The fastest community response came from a fan who reverse-engineered the Macca figure from promotional materials, modeled it, and uploaded the printable file publicly with a pay-what-you-want option. The model spread quickly across social media on September 25.

Responses to the copycat were divided. Some users argued that 3D printing a limited item defeats its only real value — scarcity:

“

"Why would you print it if it already lost its main and only purpose, which is rarity?"

Others were more blunt about the price:

“

"Dude, I'm all for criticizing the price, but this is just f**king stupid."

But plenty of people just wanted the toy:

“

"This is the coolest thing! I only wanted this [figure], but I wasn't about to drop $400 to get it."

And at least one person held both views at once:

“

"I imagined this would happen, but not so soon... That said, I want one."

The quotes above were reported by IGN from X/Twitter user reactions. Oakley sunglasses and the hat remain impossible to replicate this way — but the most visually distinctive item in the box can now be printed for the cost of filament.

Why It Landed Harder Than It Should Have

The $400 price might have been absorbable on its own. But this announcement dropped into a specific context that amplified the backlash.

No disc in the 'physical' version either. GTA 6's standard physical edition comes with a case but only a download code inside — no disc. Rockstar's stated reason is preventing pre-launch leaks. The result is that "physical" GTA 6 now means buying a case for a code, and the collector's edition means buying merchandise for a code you'd have to purchase separately.

Sony is ending physical disc production by January 2028. That plan was already circulating in gaming discussions before this announcement. GTA 6's format choices — and this collector's edition — arrived while those conversations were still fresh, making the $400 box feel less like a one-off decision and more like a signal.

The Red Dead Redemption 2 comparison. In 2018, Rockstar's RDR2 collector's edition cost $100 and included the game, physical in-game map, and actual in-game content unlocks. The contrast has been widely cited:

Rockstar's Position

Rockstar has not publicly responded to the controversy beyond the original announcement. The company marketed the collection as "a premium collector's box inspired by Macca the Gator, a fictional TV show from Leonida" and explicitly stated the game is not included. The collection is listed as limited edition with no indicated restock.

The Oakley sunglasses — a legitimate licensed product — likely account for a substantial portion of the price, but Rockstar has not broken down the cost of individual items.

GamePeak Take

Whether $400 is defensible depends entirely on what you want from it. If you're a dedicated collector who wanted the Oakley collab or the official Leonida map as a display piece, the box has clear appeal at a known cost. If you expected a collector's edition to include the thing being collected — the game — this announcement was a disappointment by design, not by surprise.

The 3D printing story is the detail that will stick, though. Within 24 hours of a $400 box being announced, the most distinctive item in it was free. That's not a story about piracy — it's a story about perceived value, and how fast the internet can test it.

GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. No PC release date has been announced.
