The Announcement That Wasn't What Fans Wanted
At Meta Connect 2026 on September 24, Capcom's legendary courtroom adventure series made a surprise appearance — just not the one anyone was hoping for. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies VR, developed and published by AMATA K.K. under a Capcom license, will launch for Meta VR Glasses, Meta Quest 3/3S, Quest Pro, and Quest 2 sometime in 2027. Platform: Meta Horizon Store exclusive.
The last time fans played a genuinely new Ace Attorney case was 2017, when The Great Ace Attorney 2: Resolve launched in Japan (and 2021 outside Japan). That's a nine-year gap for most of the world. Instead of Ace Attorney 7, they got a VR port of a 3DS game from 2013.

Gameplay carries the original five-episode story into VR: Phoenix Wright, Apollo Justice, and Athena Cykes are all playable. In courtroom segments, players physically pick up and inspect evidence, track witnesses, and can shout "OBJECTION!" or present evidence with actual hand gestures. Investigation sections place you in fully explorable 3D crime scenes. The over-the-top character animations during trials are preserved in third-person.
Timeline: How We Got Here
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| July 2013 | Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies launches on Nintendo 3DS (first 3D entry) |
| June 2016 | Ace Attorney 6: Spirit of Justice — last numbered mainline entry |
| August 2017 | The Great Ace Attorney 2: Resolve (Japan) — most recent new title |
| July 2021 | Great Ace Attorney Chronicles released worldwide — last new content outside Japan |
| 2024 | Ace Attorney Investigations Collection released |
| September 20, 2026 | Capcom announces Ace Attorney Trilogy (2019) surpasses 5 million copies sold |
| September 24, 2026 | AMATA K.K. announces Dual Destinies VR at Meta Connect 2026 |
The franchise has sold over 15 million copies total according to Capcom investor data published in September 2026. The appetite clearly exists. The supply of new cases has not kept pace.
Why Dual Destinies Specifically?
From a technical standpoint, the choice makes sense. Ace Attorney 1 through 4 use 2D sprite art that doesn't translate well to VR immersion. Dual Destinies was the first fully 3D entry in the series — the earliest title that could be reasonably rebuilt for VR environments without a ground-up visual overhaul.
It is also the most accessible entry point for new players, since it does not require knowledge of previous games to follow its story.
The catch: among series veterans, Dual Destinies is one of the lower-rated mainline entries, largely because it removed free-roaming investigation segments present in earlier games — the very mechanic most suited to VR exploration. The irony hasn't been lost on the community.
Positions
AMATA K.K. (official description):
“"The hit Ace Attorney series finally comes to the immersive world of virtual reality! Take on the roles of Phoenix Wright, Apollo Justice, and Athena Cykes — and prove your clients innocent of all charges!"
— ace-attorney-vr.amata.co.jp, September 24, 2026
Capcom: Capcom holds the license but is not the developer on this project. No statement was issued regarding Ace Attorney 7 development status.
Game Informer (Charles Harte): "A VR adaptation is particularly surprising... the only remaining Phoenix Wright adventure you couldn't play on modern platforms was his crossover with Professor Layton. As such, it seemed like the only next step was a brand new entry."
Community Reaction
The fan subreddit shifted from cautious hope to visible grief within hours of the announcement. Posts described the news as "baffling." One called Capcom "incompetent" for delivering a VR remake as the franchise's contribution to its 25th anniversary. A Reddit thread asked fans where they were when the announcement dropped, framing it as a generational event — though not in the celebratory sense.
On X:
“"Quickest excited to disappointed I've experienced in my life." — X user, September 24, 2026
“"Immediately jumped out of my seat and then actually read the whole tweet." — X user, September 24, 2026

What This Means for Ace Attorney Going Forward
There is one structural reason not to despair entirely: AMATA K.K. is not Capcom's internal Ace Attorney team. This is a licensed project — Capcom contracted an external studio to build the VR port while retaining IP ownership. If Ace Attorney 7 is in development at Capcom, it would not be affected by this project's production cycle.
Game Informer's analysis noted this directly: "There's a decent chance Ace Attorney 7 is still in the works — the development team won't be preoccupied with finishing this VR title first."
The franchise's sales milestones (5 million for the Trilogy alone, 15 million series-wide) give Capcom a commercial rationale to eventually greenlight a new entry. The next logical announcement window is The Game Awards on December 10, 2026.
Until then, the question remains open — and fans have been keeping it open for nearly a decade.
