The Short Version
Hell is Us, the action-adventure published by Nacon and developed by Rogue Factor, launched on Nintendo Switch 2 on September 24, 2026. First released on September 4, 2025 for PS5, Xbox Series X\|S, and PC, it joins Nintendo's handheld family roughly a year later.
Hell is Us has a clear identity: no map, no compass, no quest markers. Players find their way through NPC conversations and environmental clues alone. With the original earning a 77–78 Metascore and "generally favorable" reception — and a quiet cult following — this Switch 2 edition matters because it carries that experimental design into portable play.

What You Actually Play

The setting is Hadea, a fictional country torn apart by civil war. You play Rémi, a member of the ON Peacekeepers who goes AWOL to search for his parents and heads into the heart of the fighting. But the land is overrun by supernatural beings called Hollow Walkers, spawned by a mysterious catastrophe. Because no modern weapon can bring them down, combat is built around melee arms — swords, spears, and axes.
Play centers on third-person melee combat and exploration, with health and stamina management and a drone tool for scouting and distraction. Above all, what defines the game is that its "semi-open world" comes with no guidance at all: there are no waypoints pointing you to a destination and no quest log tracking your progress. Information comes only through dialogue and observation.
The Move to Switch 2
The Switch 2 edition wasn't a straight path. Nacon adjusted its plans and reset the date to September 24, citing a crowded September release window. This week is indeed a packed stretch, with major releases like EA Sports FC 27 landing alongside it.
A cult favorite crossing over to Nintendo's new handheld shows Switch 2 settling in as a viable stage for third-party action titles. The open question for this version is how the game's marker-free exploration meshes with the shorter sessions of handheld play.
Critical Reception: The Original's Report Card
Hell is Us isn't a blockbuster, but it earned respect on craft. The composite scores by platform look like this.
| Platform | Metacritic | Note |
|---|---|---|
| PC | 78 | Generally favorable |
| Xbox Series X|S | 78 | Generally favorable |
| PlayStation 5 | 77 | Generally favorable |
| OpenCritic | 79% recommend | — |
Individual review scores land between 7/10 and 9/10. The strength critics kept returning to is atmosphere and immersion: the minimalist design — guidance stripped away, a restrained UI — actually pulls you deeper into the world. That same lack of hand-holding, however, is where opinions split.
A Map-Free Design — Where Opinions Divide
Marker-free exploration is both Hell is Us's identity and its barrier. Reasoning out where to go yourself delivers the thrill of discovery, but for players used to convenience it can read as frustration. Forcing melee through the "modern weapons don't work on the supernatural" premise also sets it apart from anyone expecting the feel of gunplay.
Even so, the reason it built a cult following is clear: the tension and immersion that come from a design that won't hold your hand, and the cold atmosphere of Hadea as a stage. The Switch 2 expansion opens a new door for Nintendo players who haven't tried the experiment yet. For the record, the PC version is also available at a steep discount on Steam (around 60% off at the time of writing).
GamePeak's Bottom Line
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What launched? | The Switch 2 edition of the action-adventure Hell is Us (September 24) |
| What is it? | A dark action-adventure built on map-free exploration and melee combat |
| How good is it? | Original scored 77–78 on Metacritic, 79% on OpenCritic |
| Who's it for? | Players who enjoy unguided exploration and atmospheric immersion |
| Any caveat? | The hands-off design and forced melee are divisive |
Hell is Us is a game remembered for a distinct identity rather than a flashy budget. Whether its experiment — exploration with the markers removed, wrapped in a cold world — survives the leap to Switch 2 handheld play is the crux of this release. If you're after a game that makes you read the world yourself instead of leaning on prompts, it's a strong pick for the week.
