What WoW Forever Actually Is

World of Warcraft: Forever is a third, distinct version of World of Warcraft, running in parallel with modern WoW (currently on the Midnight expansion) and Classic WoW. It is not a new expansion to either branch — it is its own game service with a permanent level cap of 60, set on the original Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor continents.

Blizzard's stated design goal is to give Classic-focused players a home that stays current without ever advancing past level 60. Rather than cycling players into a new expansion every two years, Blizzard will continue adding new raids, dungeons, quests, and systems within the level 60 world indefinitely.

The key structural departures from 2019's Classic WoW:

  • Realmless servers: Players choose a ruleset (standard PvE, PvP) instead of a specific realm. Anyone on the same ruleset is visible and groupable, eliminating the low-population server problem that fragmented Classic communities over time.
  • Legacy system: A new account-wide progression layer that rewards replayability without stat inflation.
  • Six new class/race combinations not available at the original 2004 launch.
  • Skyborne: A fully new playable race with a dedicated starting zone.

How to Get Into the Beta

Option 1: Buy a pack (guaranteed access, immediate)

Two tiers include beta access:

  • Skyborne Epic Pack — $59.99
  • Warcraft Forever Collection — $79.99

Both unlock beta immediately. Cosmetics, a 30-day game time credit (usable from November 4), and Invite-A-Friend codes are also included.

Option 2: Free opt-in (no guarantee)

Anyone can register on the WoW: Forever website using the "Beta Opt-in" button at no cost. Blizzard distributes invites in waves as beta capacity expands.

Beta Phases

The beta runs in two phases with a progressively rising level cap:

PhaseEstimated StartLevel CapNew Dungeons
Phase 1September 1720Hall of Thanes, Ruins of Lordaeron
Phase 2~October 830Excavation Site: Wetlands
Beta EndOctober 21

All races and classes are playable. Skyborne elves are available in the beta only to players who have purchased a pack.

The Legacy System

Legacy is the new account-wide progression system designed around replayability and alt leveling. Blizzard's stated inspiration was watching Hardcore WoW: the constant flow of new characters leveling through the world made it feel alive. Legacy is an attempt to replicate that energy without the permanent death consequence.

How it works:

  1. 1Complete Legacy Challenges — achievement-like goals such as leveling a different class or achieving a profession milestone — to earn Legacy Points (LP).
  2. 2Spend LP in one of three Legacy Trees: Professions, Adventure, or Resourcefulness.
  3. 3Accumulate LP over time to earn rewards on the Legacy Reward Track — cosmetics and prestige items only.

Key design decisions:

  • LP is account-wide — shared across all characters on the account
  • LP is spent per character, independently — each character allocates from the same pool separately
  • Launch spending cap: 16 points per character, earning cap: 65 points
  • Reward Track items provide no gameplay advantage

Notable tree unlocks:

TreeTalentEffect
AdventureWell RestedHigher rested XP cap (strong for alt levelers)
ProfessionsBountiful HarvestMore materials from gathering nodes
ResourcefulnessReagent EconomyRemoves reagent requirements from class abilities

Blizzard has confirmed that new challenges, trees, and rewards will be added with each content patch.

Camping

Camping is a new social profession system for the open world. Players can set up a campfire anywhere in outdoor zones. Each campfire supports up to three attached objects (one per player), each contributing a one-hour buff. Every profession has its own object type learned at specific skill levels:

  • Blacksmiths — Sharpening Wheel (Attack Power)
  • Tailors — Faction Banner (Spirit)
  • Herbalists — Incense Candle (Intellect)
  • Alchemists — Alchemy Lab (utility)
  • Leatherworkers — Tanning Rack (required for advanced Leatherworking recipes in the field)

High-end campfire blueprints drop from dungeon bosses, allowing 5–10 object slots. Cooks can craft upgraded campfire tiers that expand capacity. The system is designed to make professions visible and valuable in the open world — a meaningful choice about which players you want near your campfire, not just a crafting menu interaction.

Skyborne: The New Race

The Skyborne are the first fully new playable race added to WoW Forever. Their home is Zephras Isle, a dedicated starting zone for levels 1 through 12 that blends Classic Warcraft visual design with architecture inspired by Skywall.

What distinguishes Skyborne from prior new races is that class access differs by faction:

FactionUnique Class Access
Alliance SkyborneMage
Horde SkyborneShaman
BothWarrior, Hunter, Rogue, Druid

Skyborne Druids have race-exclusive druid forms. The race also comes with new racial abilities, character customization options, voices, and dances created specifically for the species.

Six New Class/Race Combinations

WoW Forever launches with six class-and-race pairings absent from the original 2004 release:

RaceNew Class
GnomePriest
HumanHunter
DwarfShaman
OrcMage
TrollWarlock
UndeadPaladin

Blizzard has confirmed more combinations are planned for future updates.

Road to Launch and Beyond

Blizzard outlined the post-launch content roadmap at BlizzCon 2026:

  • December 9, 2026: First new raids unlock
  • Ongoing: Additional raids, dungeons, PvP updates, world content
  • Hardcore mode planned for a future update
  • A "revamped iconic raid" is in development (specific raid not yet named)
  • Continued new quests and world events across the full level 1–60 journey each patch

The level cap will remain permanently at 60 — WoW Forever is designed to stay in the original-Azeroth era indefinitely rather than advancing into an expansion timeline.

Context: Where WoW Forever Fits

WoW's game library has now expanded to three concurrent versions: modern WoW (currently Midnight, the Warcraft universe's ongoing live story), Classic WoW (progressing through expansion eras for players who want the historical timeline), and WoW Forever (a permanent level-60 game updated with new content, never advancing past the original world). Blizzard has positioned these as three distinct player profiles rather than a choice where one replaces another.

Realmless servers are the most structurally significant change from the Classic WoW experience. Classic's realm-based architecture led to some servers becoming dominant while others lost population, making group content increasingly difficult for players on lower-population realms. Removing realm choice from the equation consolidates the player pool by default.

Bottom Line

If you have an active WoW subscription, you get WoW Forever on November 4 at no additional cost. Beta access costs $59.99 via the Skyborne Epic Pack. Free opt-in registration is open now for players willing to take a chance on a wave invite. The beta runs until October 21, giving roughly a month of early access before launch.
