Nintendo held its dedicated Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct on September 8 at 10am ET, and the headline was everything Zelda fans had hoped for: series producer Eiji Aonuma took the stage to show roughly 15 minutes of live gameplay from the Ocarina of Time remake, confirming the game launches November 5, 2026 — exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2.

November 5 — GTA 6's New Competition

The release date is not accidental. November 5 places Ocarina of Time remake squarely in the same month as Grand Theft Auto VI, which is also targeting a November 2026 release window. It's a bold move from Nintendo: the Switch 2's most anticipated remake will compete directly with what many are calling the biggest gaming launch of the decade.

The comparison isn't as outlandish as it sounds. The original Ocarina of Time is one of the highest-rated games in history, and this remake is being built for a platform with already-strong install numbers. That Nintendo is confident enough to aim for the same month as GTA 6 speaks to how much is riding on this launch — and how much faith it has in the remake's quality.

A Faithful Remake, Not a Reimagining

Aonuma opened his presentation by describing the project as "a faithful interpretation using modern technologies." That framing is deliberate. While some fans had hoped for a Resident Evil 2-style reinvention that expands the original's world, Ocarina of Time 2026 preserves the structure, dungeon order, item progression, and puzzles of the original — overhauling the presentation rather than the design.

Every dungeon remains in its original sequence. The boss roster is intact. The story beats — Kokiri Forest, Hyrule Castle, the Temple of Time, the time-jump — follow exactly as they did in 1998. What changes is almost everything around that structure.

The combat pace is notably faster — enemies react more quickly and Link's attack animations are snappier, removing the slow-motion impact frame of the original. The slingshot targets in the Great Deku Tree are still solved the same way; the puzzles are unchanged.

Threads of Time — The Quest Log Ocarina Never Had

The original Ocarina of Time had no quest tracker. Players who put the game down for a week frequently returned unsure where to go next. The 2026 remake adds Threads of Time, a built-in quest log with two functions:

  • At any point in the game, check what story progress you've made and what your next objective is
  • As you complete the main story, a large in-game tapestry fills in progressively — a visual map of your journey

The Zelda series has resisted waypoint systems since Breath of the Wild leaned into emergent exploration, but Ocarina of Time's more linear structure makes a soft quest tracker a sensible addition, especially for players new to the original.

Zelda Notes App Integration

The Zelda Notes companion app — already supporting the Switch 2 Editions of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom — expands to cover Ocarina of Time.

  • Track enemies defeated, hours played, routes taken, and story achievements
  • A landmark-photo minigame: look at a screenshot, find it on the in-game map
  • Unlock Ocarina songs in the app to play on a digital ocarina
  • Daily trivia quiz with 2,000+ questions; spend in-game Rupees for extra attempts

Switch 2 Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition — October 29

The hardware arrives a week ahead of the game. On October 29, Nintendo releases:

  • Nintendo Switch 2 Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition console — custom design
  • Matching Pro Controller — Zelda-themed design
  • Carrying Case — included in the bundle

The game itself is sold separately. If you want the full package — console + controller + case + game — plan your budget accordingly. Nintendo's previous themed bundles (the OLED Splatoon edition, the Switch Lite Dialga/Palkia edition) routinely sell out first-day, and this one has bigger brand recognition behind it.

Physical Ocarina — Yes, a Real One

Nintendo and HORI are releasing two actual ocarinas to coincide with the game:

  • Playable Ocarina (Nintendo) — A real instrument you can learn to play. The Switch 2 microphone picks up notes and activates in-game events
  • HORI Electric Ocarina — Press a button to play full songs automatically; no musical skill required

Both are due later in 2026. The mic-detection feature works for humming as well — players who know the songs from memory can hum them and have the game respond.

The Live-Action Movie: A Title, No Trailer

The Direct confirmed the title of the upcoming live-action Zelda film: simply The Legend of Zelda, with no subtitle. Shigeru Miyamoto described it as "an original film based on the stories, ideas and concepts of The Legend of Zelda that have built up through 40 years of games," adding that the Triforce will play a role. The film hits theaters worldwide on April 30, 2027. No trailer aired — fans hoping for a first look were disappointed, though a reveal ahead of the November game release seems likely.

Who Should Play This

Longtime Zelda fans who've played the original: Free camera, manual jump, sprint, and full voice acting in cutscenes modernize the moment-to-moment feel without touching the dungeon design you remember. Every puzzle is there. Every boss is there. Ocarina of Time in 4K with competent controls.

Fans new to Ocarina of Time: This is the ideal entry point to one of gaming's landmark titles. Threads of Time and Zelda Notes reduce the friction of a 1998 game structure without removing the exploration or the sense of discovery.

Players weighing this against GTA 6: Different genres, different scales, different experiences. Ocarina of Time is a 20-30 hour narrative action-adventure with no open world — it has a clear beginning, middle, and end. GTA 6 is a sprawling sandbox. You can play both.
