Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct: What to Expect

Nintendo's official description is characteristically brief: the show will "deliver a variety of information related to The Legend of Zelda." But context narrows down the likely agenda considerably.

The Ocarina of Time remake is the centerpiece. Nintendo confirmed at June's Direct that it's arriving this year on Switch 2. With only a few months of 2026 remaining, the 40th anniversary show is the obvious moment to put a date on the calendar.

The Live-Action Zelda Movie

The long-anticipated live-action Legend of Zelda film — a collaboration between Nintendo and Sony — is slated for April 2027. Nintendo has officially confirmed two cast members so far: Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link and Bo Bragason as Zelda. Beyond those two, a wider cast has been widely reported through various industry sources, though Nintendo has not formally announced them.

Given that the film is fewer than eight months from release, this Direct is a natural platform to reveal a first teaser trailer and formalize the full cast announcement — both of which would generate enormous press coverage and begin the film's marketing campaign in earnest.

General Nintendo Direct (Sept. 9): Switch 2 Winter Lineup

The following day's broader Direct focuses on "Nintendo Switch 2 games launching this winter," in Nintendo's own words. That framing typically understates what actually gets revealed, and most analysts expect at least one title outside the immediate window.

The Treehouse: Live stream that follows the Sept. 9 Direct will run approximately 110 minutes and typically delivers extended hands-on gameplay footage of whatever was just announced — expect it to show significantly more of Ocarina's remake and any other highlighted titles.

Why 40 Years Matters

The Legend of Zelda debuted on the Famicom Disk System on February 21, 1986. In four decades, the franchise has sold over 150 million units worldwide across 19 mainline entries, spawned animated series, concert tours, and now a live-action film. It remains one of the most consistently acclaimed franchises in gaming history, with Ocarina of Time frequently cited as the most influential video game ever made.

The franchise's 25th anniversary in 2011 produced the Skyward Sword reveal and a celebrated Symphony of the Goddesses concert tour. The 30th in 2016 brought Breath of the Wild's first full reveal. At 40, with both a remake of its most iconic entry and a Hollywood film in play, Nintendo has more anniversary material to work with than at any prior milestone.

Community Expectations

Anticipation is notably high. When Ocarina of Time's remake was first teased at the June 2026 Direct, the clip was viewed millions of times within hours. Forums and social media have been theorizing since then about how faithfully the remake will preserve the original's structure versus reimagining it in the style of Tears of the Kingdom's open Hyrule.
