Grinding Gear Games launched PoE2 patch 0.5.5 on September 4. The Forbidden Rites event league opens a fresh economy, adds Rituals to every campaign area, introduces the Sacred Bloom item to unlock the Viridian Wildwood, and finally lets you pause and resume the Trial of Chaos mid-run.

Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5.5 Forbidden Rites — Economy Reset, Sacred Bloom Wildwood, and a Rebuilt Trial of Chaos

Overview

Grinding Gear Games launched Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5.5 on September 4, 2026 at 1:00 PM PDT (September 5 at 05:00 KST / 21:00 CEST). The update introduces the Forbidden Rites event league — a completely separate economy where every player starts fresh — and delivers the game's most significant systemic overhaul since Early Access launched.

This is the final major content drop before the Path of Exile 2 1.0 full release on December 11, 2026, which will add the long-awaited Duelist class. GGG explicitly deferred all class balance changes to 1.0, so patch 0.5.5 is system-focused: new league content, rebuilt mechanics, and quality-of-life improvements.

Existing characters from the Early Access launch and the Runes of Aldur league remain untouched and fully playable. To participate in Forbidden Rites, create a new character from the character-selection screen.

The Forbidden Rites Event League

Forbidden Rites is a time-limited event league with its own economy. All players begin at level 1 on a clean trade board. Here is how it coexists with the existing game:

  • Old characters persist: Early Access and Runes of Aldur characters stay where they are.
  • Runes of Aldur continues: Both leagues run in parallel; their economies do not interact.
  • League modes available: Standard, Hardcore, Solo Self-Found, and private league variants of each.
  • Hardcore death routing: Death in Hardcore Forbidden Rites drops you into Standard Forbidden Rites — not back to the old economy.
  • Duration: Runs until the Path of Exile 2 1.0 launch on December 11, 2026.

GGG framed Forbidden Rites as an event, not a standalone league, specifically because the full balance manifesto was moved to 1.0.

Ritual System Changes

Campaign Rituals

Patch 0.5.5 installs a Ritual encounter in every campaign area. These campaign-specific altars are meaningfully different from their endgame counterparts — they pay leveling currency and gear, not the high-end endgame items.

Twice per Act and once per Interlude, the world map marks a cluster of Ritual Effigies. Each cluster works as a chain: kill the boss on one altar and that boss carries forward into the next fight, stacking with the next area boss. The final room lets you spend accumulated Tribute on Unique items.

Party Play Fix

Before 0.5.5After 0.5.5
Shared Tribute pool — one player drives all spendingEach player has a personal Tribute pool and reward list
One player activates the Ritual for the groupAll players in the area must hear Aoife's intro before the Ritual starts
Party rewards could be rerolledParty member rewards cannot be rerolled

Sacred Bloom and Endgame Ritual

Endgame Ritual encounters now award a new item: Sacred Bloom. Spend one on an Atlas map cluster and a Viridian Wildwood sub-zone spawns inside those maps. See the section below for how the Wildwood works.

A new Atlas notable, Royal Lenience, allows deferring items using Tribute already offered to the King — at a steep 500% premium on offered Tribute. Using more than one Ritual Tablet on a map now adds an extra altar and increases Azmeri Wisp yield inside the Wildwood.

Sacred Bloom and the Viridian Wildwood

Using a Sacred Bloom assigns a Viridian Wildwood to a cluster of your Atlas maps. When you enter a Wildwood-tagged map, a dark fog-filled forest sub-zone appears.

Inside, your objective is to collect Azmeri Wisps — three types: Primal, Vivid, and Wild. Once you leave the Wildwood, the Wisps empower all monsters in the main map, making them harder to kill but increasing the quantity and quality of drops. The composition of Wisps you collected shapes which rewards are amplified.

The standalone Viridian Wildwood Unique Map has been disabled. Any copies already on your Atlas will be rerolled into a different Unique Map where possible.

Trial of Chaos — Full Rework

The Trial of Chaos rework is the most player-requested change in this patch. The core problem was simple: starting a Trial locked you out of trading, logging off, or stopping until the run was complete. Patch 0.5.5 dismantles that constraint entirely.

Before and After

FeatureBefore 0.5.5After 0.5.5
Mid-run exitNot allowed — trade/sleep blockedLeave at any point; resume from same room
Death consequenceLost all accumulated rewardsPer-room reward chest limits loss to one room
Full-run reward poolCurrency, Soul Cores, corrupted raresCurrency and Soul Cores only (corrupted rares removed)
Trialmaster dropCould drop Magic Inscribed UltimatumsMagic Inscribed Ultimatums no longer drop
Run extensionNoneClear a 10-trial Inscribed Ultimatum → continue twice without feeding a new item
Extension rewardsEach additional success awards a different Trialmaster Fragment
Currency wagerNoneDouble-or-nothing Currency wager available at the continue prompt

The ability to leave and resume is the headline, but the per-room reward chest is arguably more impactful for casual play: a death no longer erases the session's entire loot.

Expedition Goes Core

The Expedition content introduced in Runes of Aldur — Farroul, Dannig, and the broader Expedition mechanic — becomes permanent core content in patch 0.5.5.

3 TabletsAdds one additional Kalguuran Expedition
4 TabletsAdds one additional Verisium Remnant + further 35% density increase

Expedition Tablets are expected to displace Irradiated Tablets for most endgame farming strategies, since more Remnants translate to higher-quality rewards.

New Soul Cores and Item Filter Notes

  • 17 new Soul Cores added across various augment slots.
  • Existing Soul Core effects adjusted (specific buffs and nerfs not listed in the pre-launch notes; GGG flagged these as in-flight changes).
  • Sacred Bloom added to the Map Fragments item class.
  • Expedition Tablet added to the Tablets item class.
  • Players using custom item filters should update them before launching Forbidden Rites; new item names will not display correctly in outdated filters.

What Is NOT in This Patch

GGG was direct about what Forbidden Rites does not include:

  • No class balance changes. The comprehensive skill and build tuning originally planned for 0.5.5 was folded into the 1.0 balance manifesto. GGG described this portion as "two-thirds" of what the 1.0 update will contain — covering skills, animations, feel, passive tree reworks, and unique rebalancing.
  • No Duelist class. The sixth class launches with 1.0 on December 11. A Duelist deep dive is included in the official 0.5.5 reveal video as a preview only.

Players who expected a meta-shaking balance patch before 1.0 will need to wait three more months.

Community Reaction

Western community response — across the official Path of Exile subreddit and Discord — was broadly positive, with the Trial of Chaos exit-and-resume change drawing the most immediate praise. The phrase "finally" appeared in a significant share of top-voted comments on the announcement thread.

The absence of a balance patch split opinions. Veteran players pointed to GGG's consistency in delivering on pre-announced timelines as a reason to trust the 1.0 balance drop. Newer players expressed frustration that dominant farming strategies and underperforming skills will remain unchanged through the end of the calendar year.

The economy reset itself attracted a segment of returning players who described the clean trade board as the main reason to re-engage before 1.0 goes live.

GamePeak Assessment

ChangeRating
Trial of Chaos mid-run exit★★★★★ — The single most-requested QoL fix in Early Access
Sacred Bloom / Wildwood integration★★★★☆ — Adds depth to Atlas strategy; Sacred Bloom supply rate TBD
Campaign Ritual addition★★★☆☆ — Enriches leveling without changing the act structure
Expedition going core★★★★☆ — Removes league-gated FOMO for a strong mechanic
Economy reset★★★★☆ — Best re-entry point before 1.0; clean market for new and returning players
No class balance★★☆☆☆ — Expected, but still the loudest absence

Forbidden Rites offers the cleanest on-ramp into Path of Exile 2 between now and the 1.0 launch. If you have been waiting for an economy reset to return, this is the moment — the next one after this is 1.0 itself.
