Blizzard's September 1 tuning lifts Frost DK, Feral Druid, and Hunters in PvE; healer PvP sustain takes a sweeping cut ahead of Tuesday's weekly maintenance.

WoW Midnight September 1 Class Tuning: Frost DK, Feral, Hunters Buffed; Healer PvP Sustain Hammered

Overview

Blizzard posted the September 1 class tuning round on August 28 via the official WoW forums, with all changes going live during Tuesday's weekly maintenance. The adjustments draw from Mythic+, Raid, and PvP data accumulated across Midnight Season 1's Curse of Ula'tek content cycle.

Race to World First Context

Timing is notable here. As PCGamesN reported on August 30, both Echo and Liquid are currently pushing the final Mythic boss of Venomous Abyss in the Race to World First. The tuning lands right at the competition's closing stages, which means the PvE changes are unlikely to affect World First outcomes but will immediately reshape the meta for the rest of the player base from Tuesday onward — raid compositions, Mythic+ tier lists, and PvP matchup dynamics all shift on September 1.

Blizzard's developer notes flag Frost DK for "single target and two-target cleave" shortfalls. Feral Druid is called out as "performing below expectations, particularly in raid encounters." The Protection Paladin Blaze of Glory 150% spike is the most eye-catching figure in the patch — a single-ability change large enough to meaningfully reorder tank damage output in dungeon content.

Bonus Roll Restriction — Already Live

Independent of Tuesday's maintenance window, Blizzard has already applied a Bonus Roll restriction: rolls can now only be spent on encounters where the character is eligible to receive loot. Using a Bonus Roll on a subsequent attempt after a boss is already on lockout is no longer possible. Community Manager Kaivax described this as "healthier for the acquisition of loot overall."

PvP Changes

Healer-wide sustain nerf

The headline PvP change applies universally to all healer specs: the Gladiator's Distinction set bonus now grants 5% primary stat (down from 10%). Blizzard's rationale is direct:

"Healers are able to top off targets too quickly in PvP, resulting in very long combat times." — Blizzard Class Tuning Forum Post, August 28, 2026

Impact by Content Type

Raiding: Frost DK, Feral Druid, and both Hunter specs receive the strongest DPS lifts. Protection Paladin's Blaze of Glory more than doubles — a change likely to reorder tank damage rankings in Mythic difficulty.

Mythic+: Frost and Fire Mage, Windwalker Monk, and Havoc DH all gain moderate damage. Vengeance DH picks up meaningful survivability improvements useful in high-key content.

Competitive PvP: Expect noticeably shorter arena matches. Healer sustain is down universally through the trinket nerf. BM Hunter burst windows are trimmed. Mage defensive tools lose 25% absorption. Feral Druid and Enhancement Shaman gain ground offensively. Discipline Priest stands out as the clearest healer-side winner: absorb and Atonement buffs partially offset the universal trinket nerf.
