The Leak
On August 28, a roughly 2.5-minute internal test trailer for EA Motive's in-development Iron Man game began spreading across ResetEra and Reddit. The footage carries a watermark reading "AUG26 TEST" — placing its creation on August 26, 2026, from what appears to be a recent internal build. There is no audio, multiple placeholder assets are visible, and the trailer ends on a blank "Release Window" field.
This is not a finished trailer. It is internal footage that was never meant to be seen publicly. EA had not planned to show it.
By the time the studio responded, the clips were already circulating on thousands of accounts across X, YouTube, and Discord. EA's choices were narrow: ignore it, issue takedowns, or own it. They chose to own it.
Also circulating this week: completely separate footage from Avalanche Studios' long-cancelled Iron Man game, which was in development in the early 2010s before being shelved. The two projects have no connection, though the simultaneous leaks caused initial confusion. According to eXputer's breakdown, the Motive footage is what sparked EA's response.
What EA Did
Within hours of the footage spreading, EA created a new official X account for the game — @PlayIronManGame — and posted a single statement:
“"Well, that didn't go as planned. But now you know, and we've got a lot more to show you. See you when we're ready."
— Marvel's Iron Man (@PlayIronManGame), August 28, 2026
EA also confirmed to Kotaku directly that the leaked footage is real. The tweet, as reported by IGN, had accumulated 14.8 million views and 198,000 likes by August 30, 2026.
The response is a conspicuous departure from how publishers have typically handled comparable leaks. For context: Rockstar Games has spent months pursuing the GTA 6 leaker through subpoenas and bulk DMCA filings — some of which hit journalists and Rockstar's own official press screenshots — with limited results and significant collateral damage to the studio's public standing. EA, facing early-build footage that clearly isn't done, chose brevity and humor instead.

What the Footage Shows
Everything below comes from an unfinished internal build and may change substantially before release. Breakdowns from Polygon, Eurogamer, and eXputer are in agreement on the following.
World and Setting
The primary open-world location is Chicago — a deliberate departure from the New York-centric settings of Insomniac's Spider-Man games and many other Marvel adaptations. Additional locations in the footage include Japan and a S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier.
Combat and Movement
The footage shows high-speed aerial traversal with immediate transitions into on-foot brawling. Iron Man's arsenal includes the chest repulsor beam, rockets, arm-mounted lasers, and homing missiles. Polygon's breakdown describes the combat philosophy as informed by the Batman Arkham and Marvel's Spider-Man franchises — grounded melee with gadget variety.
Suit Customization
The customization system appears to draw on two of Motive's own previous projects: Resident Evil-style inventory management and Dead Space's node-based upgrade grid. Components and weapon modules are laid out on a circuit-board interface for individual placement.
Characters
| Role | Characters |
|---|---|
| Protagonist | Tony Stark — appears closer to his comics design than his MCU portrayal |
| Ally | Pepper Potts; Henry Pym (unconfirmed) |
| Villain | Obadiah Stane / Iron Monger, Madame Masque, Crimson Dynamo, Ultron (brief, unconfirmed), Yellowjacket (unconfirmed) |
Polygon notes that the Marvel characters in the footage "hew more closely to their Marvel Comics counterparts than their MCU interpretations." The implication is an original story that can operate independently of the movie continuity — relevant given that Robert Downey Jr.'s current MCU role is as Doctor Doom rather than Tony Stark.
Two Sides of the Leak
On the footage quality: The clip is watermarked as a test. Placeholder assets are visible throughout, and there is no audio. Push Square observed the words "PS5" in connection with the footage, indicating at minimum one confirmed target platform, with PC and Xbox Series X|S widely assumed given Motive's release history. Nothing about the timeline is confirmed.
The blank "Release Window" field at the trailer's end has led many observers to conclude that Motive had a reveal planned for a major event later in 2026. The Game Awards in December is the most frequently cited candidate, and eXputer echoed this assessment: "With Motive now openly acknowledging the leak and teasing more to come, an official reveal looks likely before the end of the year."
On EA's response: The post reads like something Tony Stark himself would write — acknowledging the setback, pivoting immediately into confidence. The contrast with GTA 6's situation is one that fans have drawn repeatedly. Where Rockstar's legal escalation has generated friction and news cycles of its own, EA turned an unplanned reveal into the most-engaged gaming moment of the week.
Community Reaction
The response online has been overwhelmingly positive, which commentators frame as unexpected good fortune for a game that had barely communicated publicly since 2022. Many who replied to the @PlayIronManGame post had no idea the project was still in development.
“"I feel like this leak might have helped them because all I'm seeing is overwhelmingly positive responses to it."
— fan reply, cited by IGN
“"Very on brand for Iron Man to get hacked and aura farm because of it."
— fan reply, cited by IGN
“"See this is how you handle a leak. Embrace it and keep cooking."
— fan reply, cited by IGN
The reaction also reignited concern about the fate of EA's Black Panther game, which was cancelled before any footage went public. For Iron Man, the community's reading is clear: the game is alive, looks promising even in an unfinished state, and Motive appears confident enough in what they have to let the footage stand without damage control.
About EA Motive
EA Motive is a Montreal-based studio with a track record in story-driven action games. Their recent credits include the Dead Space remake (2023) — which received strong reviews for its fidelity to the original and its technical execution — and Star Wars: Squadrons (2020). The Iron Man project is led by Olivier Proulx, who previously worked as a producer on Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy at Eidos-Montréal, alongside Ian Frazier, Maëlenn Lumineau, and JF Poirier.
Marvel Games' VP and Creative Director Bill Rosemann described the collaboration in 2022:
“"Their experience delivering both established entertainment worlds and thrilling gameplay — combined with their authentic passion for the armored icon — will fuel our quest to deliver a love letter to a legendary hero in the form of the ultimate Iron Man video game."
— Bill Rosemann, Marvel Games, EA press release, September 2022
What We Don't Know
No release date, confirmed platform list, official title, or release window has been announced. There is no official trailer. The game has no confirmed launch platforms beyond what the test build implies. All characters, settings, and systems documented above come from an internal build and may not represent the final product.
EA has said only that there is "a lot more to show" — and that it will happen "when we're ready."
