Still one of 2024's best games, now at its best price in months

Black Myth: Wukong is 30% off across Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S through August 25–26, 2026. It's not the deepest discount in the game's history, but for a title from a studio that rarely runs promotions, this is a meaningful window — especially for anyone who has been sitting on the fence since its August 2024 launch.

Why this game still matters two years later

When Game Science, a Chinese studio of around 100 developers, shipped Black Myth: Wukong in August 2024, the industry was expecting a solid regional hit. What they got instead was a global phenomenon. The game peaked at over 2.3 million simultaneous players on Steam — a record at the time — and proved that a non-Western studio could compete with the most lavish AAA productions on the market.

The game is built on Unreal Engine 5 and remains one of the most visually impressive titles on any platform. Its art direction draws directly from Journey to the West (西遊記), the 16th-century Chinese novel that follows the Monkey King — one of the most recognizable figures in East Asian culture. Rather than adapting the story wholesale, Game Science uses its mythology as a rich visual and narrative backdrop, casting players as the "Destined One" sent to recover the scattered relics of Sun Wukong's six reincarnations.

What makes it compelling beyond its visuals is combat that has its own distinct identity. It is often mistaken for a Soulslike — it isn't. The game is built around staff combos, transformation abilities, and a flexible skill tree. The difficulty is real, but it is not a game about learning enemy tells through repeated deaths. It is a game about mastering a toolkit.

What critics and players actually said

The game's critical reception was largely positive, with particular praise for presentation and originality. Its awards track record reflects that:

AwardResult
Golden Joystick Awards 2024Ultimate Game of the Year — Won
Steam Community GOTY 2024Won
Steam user reviews70,000+ reviews, Very Positive
HowLongToBeat — main story~38 hours
HowLongToBeat — completionist67+ hours

The reasons it did not sweep ceremonies like The Game Awards have been debated extensively. The 2024 competitive year included Astro Bot, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, and Metaphor: ReFantazio — an unusually stacked field. In that context, the Golden Joystick result and Steam's own community vote arguably reflect broader player sentiment more directly.

"Visually this game is absolutely stunning. Every chapter looks incredible, and the art direction is top-tier. My main advice to anyone looking at this game: do not buy it expecting Elden Ring or Sekiro. It isn't a Soulsborne game, and judging it by those standards misses what makes it special. It has its own rhythm, structure, and combat identity." — Steam user Forficula (via Gaming Bible, 2026)

Standard vs. Deluxe — which to buy

The Deluxe Edition adds cosmetic items (weapon skins, outfits) and a digital artbook and OST for $7 more over Standard. There are no gameplay-affecting items in the Deluxe bundle. If you are buying for the game itself, Standard is the right call. The cosmetics are post-credits novelties at best.

Is this the right time to finally play it?

Two years is long enough for the performance patches to do their work. Launch-day frame-rate complaints on PS5 and mid-range PCs are largely resolved. The game has received consistent post-launch updates, and the community around build-crafting and boss strategies is mature.

If you missed it in 2024, this sale removes the last reasonable excuse not to try it. At $41.99 for a 38-hour main campaign with a fully realized mythological world, the value is straightforward.

Note that there is no cross-save between platforms, so buy on the platform you intend to finish it on. There is also no multiplayer component — this is a single-player game from start to finish.
