D-3: The Zone Expands on August 20
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl launched in November 2024 as a technically rough but atmospherically dense open-world FPS. Ukrainian studio GSC Game World has been patching it steadily since then, and on August 20, 2026 — three days from now — it releases Cost of Hope, the first major story expansion. It arrives alongside a free Update 2.0 that upgrades the engine and adds improvements to all players at no cost.

Two New Regions: What You'll Actually Explore
The base game's Chornobyl Exclusion Zone was large, but two significant areas stayed off-limits. Cost of Hope opens both.
| Region | What it contains |
|---|---|
| Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant | Fully explorable for the first time — only glimpsed in the base game's opening. New hub, quests, activities, anomalies, and mutants inside the reactor complex. |
| Iron Forest | A dense, maze-like network of paths with its own hub and uncharted locations. Described by GSC as filled with anomalies and "something even more unexplainable." |
Both areas include new weapons, gear, and mutant encounters exclusive to the expansion.
The Duty vs. Freedom Storyline
Cost of Hope is not a side story. It runs parallel to the main campaign, accessed by following a PDA notification once you progress far enough as Skif. The expansion centers on a fracture between the Zone's two dominant factions — Duty, which wants to destroy the Zone, and Freedom, which wants to coexist with it.
You pick a side. The choices you make carry consequences beyond the expansion itself. GSC has positioned Cost of Hope as the middle chapter of a second STALKER trilogy, with a third expansion already planned to complete the arc.
Free Update 2.0 — Same Day, No Extra Cost
Every owner of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl gets Update 2.0 on August 20 regardless of whether they purchase Cost of Hope. GSC described it as a substantial update that includes a migration to a new version of Unreal Engine 5, alongside gameplay and technical improvements. Full patch notes have not yet been released.
Which Edition Includes Cost of Hope
| Edition | Includes Cost of Hope | Current Price (Steam) |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Edition | No | $59.99 |
| Deluxe Edition | No — Season Pass not included | $79.99 |
| Ultimate Edition | Yes — Season Pass covers Cost of Hope + future DLC | $109.99 |
If you own the Standard or Deluxe editions, you will need to purchase Cost of Hope separately when its price is announced. The Ultimate Edition's Season Pass explicitly covers two expansions and any future DLC released for the game.
Current Upgrade Promotions (Limited Time)
GSC is running upgrade discounts on Steam ahead of the August 20 launch. The Standard game itself is full price, but edition upgrade bundles are marked down 30%.
| Upgrade Path | Regular Price | Sale Price | Discount |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard → Deluxe Content | $24.99 | $17.49 | −30% |
| Deluxe → Ultimate Content | $34.99 | $24.49 | −30% |
| Standard → Ultimate (both upgrades) | $54.99 | $38.49 | −30% |
The standard game (no upgrade) remains $59.99. If you want Cost of Hope included without paying separately, the Standard → Ultimate upgrade at $38.49 is the most direct path from a base copy. The promotion end date is not stated on the store page, but the timing aligns with the expansion's August 20 release.

Should You Buy or Upgrade Now?
If you have the Ultimate Edition already: Cost of Hope is already covered by your Season Pass — no action needed.
If you have Standard and want to keep up: The Standard → Ultimate upgrade at $38.49 (−30%) includes Cost of Hope plus any future DLC. This is a cleaner buy than waiting to purchase Cost of Hope separately at an unknown price.
If you've never played STALKER 2: The base game alone at $59.99 gives access to a massive open world. Update 2.0 is free and improves the experience on day one. Cost of Hope requires progress through the main campaign before it unlocks.
If you're waiting for more reviews: Cost of Hope's price has not been announced, and the 30% upgrade offer may not persist past August 20. If you plan to play the expansion, upgrading now is likely cheaper than buying it separately later.
