Street Fighter 6 Update 1.33 Brings Yasmine — SF6's First Filipino Fighter — Plus a Full Meta Shake-Up

Street Fighter 6's Year 4 DLC season took a notable turn today. Update 1.33 / 1.000.033, deployed August 3, delivers Yasmine — the first Filipino fighter in Street Fighter 6 — alongside one of the game's most comprehensive balance overhauls since launch.

Capcom announced the character back in June and set an August 3 release window. The patch arrived on schedule.

Who Is Yasmine?

Yasmine trained under her grandfather (her Lolo) and grew up fighting alongside her older brother (Kuya). When her brother mysteriously disappeared one day, she lost her drive entirely — falling into a doomscrolling spiral on in-game social platform FooTube. A chance encounter with a French supermodel's videos reignited her spirit, sending her out into the world to cut a path back to her Kuya.

The character's backstory leans heavily into Filipino family culture. Her move names are drawn from Filipino (Tagalog), her fighting style reflects her ties to both tradition and street survival, and her personality blends grief-driven determination with social-media-generation humor.

Core Mechanic: Bayani Mode

Yasmine's kit centers on Bayani Mode — a temporary powered state triggered when specific moves land on an opponent. Her knife glows blue in this state, and the follow-up hits of her Alon special change depending on the strength used, ranging from a knockdown to a ground bounce to a launcher. The mode dissipates after use, so managing entry conditions is the skill ceiling separating casual play from competitive effectiveness.

Balance Adjustment Philosophy

Capcom was direct in explaining the intent behind the broader character changes in this update.

"

"While we believe the game's balance has reached a reasonably stable state thanks to repeated adjustments, the relative strength of each character has not shifted significantly in recent updates. Due to this, we decided to implement changes specifically to shake things up."

— Capcom, Official Patch Notes (via MP1st)

This is not a maintenance patch. It is an intentional disruption of the current meta — affecting almost every character in the roster with adjustments targeted at moving strength tiers rather than just fixing outliers. No single universal change applies across all characters; each adjustment is character-specific.

Modern Controls Update

Capcom also revised the Modern control scheme for specific characters. Previously, moves activated with Down+SP had no strength variation. Now:

InputStrength
↙ + SP (Down-Back + SP)Light version
↓ + SP (Down + SP)Medium version
↘ + SP (Down-Forward + SP)Heavy version

This expands neutral options for Modern control players at the cost of requiring some relearning. Assisted Combos have also been updated for affected characters to reflect these changes.

Bug fix confirmed: A Drive Reversal bug where holding back during the screen freeze would cancel previously buffered inputs has been resolved.

The Representation Angle

Yasmine is the first Filipino character to join SF6, arriving in Year 4. The Filipino gaming community has been vocal on social media since Capcom's June announcement, with enthusiasm spanning both the character design and the cultural touchstones embedded in her moveset — from the Tagalog names to the family-centered backstory.

Street Fighter has historically drawn roster depth from Southeast Asian, South Asian, and East Asian cultures, but Filipino representation at the main-series playable level has been absent until now. Capcom has not publicly commented on the significance beyond the character's own promotional materials.

Competitive Outlook

Yasmine enters as a rushdown character with a projectile (the Pangil sa Likuran boomerang) — an unusual combination that gives her tools both at close range and at mid-screen. Players who favor aggressive pressure should find her movement options intuitive.

The bigger story may be the balance patch itself. If Capcom's stated goal — shifting character strength relationships — holds, the current tier list will need reassessment. August tournaments will be the first test of where the new ceiling sits.
