Epic's August Freebies: Beacon Pines and We Were Here Together — Free August 6–13

The Epic Games Store's second free-game lineup for August is locked in. From August 6 through August 13, the storefront hands out the illustrated storybook mystery Beacon Pines and the two-player co-op puzzle adventure We Were Here Together. One to play alone, one to play with a friend — two very different genres bundled into a single week.

Beacon Pines — A Mystery Told as an Illustrated Storybook

A narrative adventure from Chicago-based indie studio Hiding Spot, published by Fellow Traveller.

Beacon Pines casts the player as both the reader of a story and Luka, the tale's central character. Released in September 2022, it presents its mystery in the form of an illustrated children's book, and that framing drives the whole experience.

Scattered through the story are special words you collect and slot into blanks in the text, and those choices branch the narrative. When a wrong turn leads the story to a dead end, the reader can rewind time and try again with a different word. A visible story tree — laying every branch out on screen — is the game's signature device.

As of July 2026, Beacon Pines holds an 81 average on OpenCritic and "Overwhelmingly Positive" user reviews on Steam, with particular praise for its branching storytelling and art direction.

We Were Here Together — A Puzzle Only Two Can Solve

The third mainline entry in the 'We Were Here' series from Dutch studio Total Mayhem Games.

We Were Here Together strands two players in separate spaces who can only communicate over walkie-talkies, describing the clues each of them sees to solve interconnected puzzles. Released in October 2019, it is the third mainline entry in the popular co-op puzzle franchise "We Were Here."

Asymmetric information is the core idea. One player might see a room full of levers while the other sees a diagram explaining what each lever opens. Because there is no screen sharing — only voice — the puzzle difficulty is really a measure of how well you and your partner communicate.

The game had a one-off 24-hour giveaway ending December 27, 2025, but the August 2026 promotion marks its first standard week-long giveaway on the platform. Anyone who missed that 24-hour window has a much easier shot this time.

The catch: you need two people. Your partner has to own the game too (a free claim counts), so make sure whoever you plan to play with also grabs it before August 13.

Still Live — OTXO and Sol Cesto (Through August 6)

Before the new lineup begins, the previous two giveaways are still claimable. OTXO is a fast top-down shooter built around bullet-time mechanics and 100-plus active abilities, while Sol Cesto is a strategic roguelite centered on grid movement and probability control. Both close on August 6, when Beacon Pines and We Were Here Together take over.

That means August 6 may briefly overlap all four titles — so if OTXO or Sol Cesto are on your radar, don't let the 6th slip past.

Why Claim Now

A claimed giveaway is yours to keep in your account for good, even if you never launch it. There's no downside to adding it to the library now and playing later. This lineup is especially well-balanced — one single-player story, one co-op experience — so it serves solo players and friends-with-a-buddy alike.

Beacon Pines is fully approachable for a narrative-heavy game thanks to its polished localization, and We Were Here Together leans on voice rather than text, so the real challenge is lining up a partner rather than reading through menus.

If you lean toward story games, Beacon Pines is the priority; if you have a friend to team up with, make it We Were Here Together. Both revert to full price on August 13, so if either interests you, all you have to do is claim within the window.
