Santa Monica Studio used its San Diego Comic-Con 2026 panel to lock in the date everyone had been waiting for: God of War Laufey arrives on PS5 on February 16, 2027. PlayStation's official account made the announcement on July 25:

"

"Enter the afterlife of the gods when God of War Laufey launches on PS5 February 16, 2027" — @PlayStation, July 25, 2026

What Is God of War Laufey?

The game centers on Faye — Kratos's wife, killed in the opening moments of 2018's God of War — as she navigates the afterlife of the gods (a realm called the Everey) to save the people she loves. Kratos himself appears early in the game but is occupied with the events of Ragnarök, leaving Faye on a path that's entirely her own.

Game director Ariel Lawrence framed it at State of Play: the team is building "a new adventure with Faye as she fights through the Everey to save the ones she loves," with Santa Monica still hard at work bringing the full experience to life.

What's clear from the June gameplay reveal is that Faye's combat identity breaks from Kratos's. Where the God of War is a brawler defined by raw power, Faye fights with lethal agility and a legendary sword — faster, more acrobatic, built for a different kind of threat.

The Cast Speaks at SDCC

Game director Ariel Lawrence and Cory Barlog led the panel alongside the full principal cast: Deborah Ann Woll (Faye/Laufey), Chris Judge (Kratos), Jack Quaid (Phranque), and Perlina Lau (Rue).

Deborah Ann Woll described Faye as a reluctant hero — specifically, "Faye McClane," after John McClane in Die Hard: someone who didn't ask to save the world but will anyway.

Chris Judge connected Faye directly to Kratos's character arc across the franchise:

"

"I always thought that Faye was the genesis of the change of Kratos. So much of the message in the first two games was about hope and forgiveness and being better. I think that all started with Kratos' relationship with Faye. That's where it began in him and what kept him going was ensuring that this wonderful life that we had created together would be better than the old man." — Chris Judge

Jack Quaid — a self-described PlayStation fan since Crash Bandicoot — said he "flipped out" when offered the role. Phranque, his character, exists as a cube-shaped entity who is very present and without much personal history, which Quaid said he finds grounding.

Perlina Lau said she received an email from Sony asking for a meeting and assumed it was a scam. When the offer actually arrived, she threw her phone across her car.

The Surprise: A New Kratos Game Is Coming

The most talked-about moment from the panel wasn't the release date — it was Barlog announcing a new Kratos-led God of War game coming after Laufey, one that directly connects to Faye's story.

No title, platform, or release window was given. The announcement was brief and deliberate, designed to signal direction rather than reveal details.

Barlog had previously stated in a June interview that "there's always going to be Kratos games," a statement Santa Monica's social account echoed:

"

"Kratos is the God of War – we have many more stories to tell with him. For now, we're excited to take fans on a journey into the afterlife of the gods with Faye and hope you'll come along for the ride!" — Santa Monica Studio

Lawrence, speaking at the SDCC panel, was equally direct:

"

"We can't not tell stories about the big guy." — Ariel Lawrence

Barlog's framing of Laufey as a bridge was the clearest it's been:

"

"Everything we are doing in the Faye game is a continuation of what came before and to set up and expand what comes next. Everything in the game is setting up for something so amazing." — Cory Barlog

Santa Monica had previously confirmed a God of War Greek Trilogy Remake is in development, covering the original 2005 PS2 game, its 2007 sequel, and 2010's God of War III for PS3. No release date and no platform beyond PS5 has been confirmed, with the studio calling the work "early stages."

Combat First Look

The June State of Play gameplay showed how Santa Monica is differentiating Faye's playstyle from Kratos's. The combat designers walked through Faye's new mechanics — ability trees tied to her agility, her legendary sword, and a distinct skill progression that rewards a faster, more mobile approach than anything in the Norse saga.

Early fan reaction has been split: the visuals and world-design received broad praise, while some players felt the combat seen in Faye's opening section looked simplified compared to late-game Ragnarök. Whether the full breadth of the system opens up as the game progresses remains to be seen at launch.

Physical Copies and the Disc Question

One detail worth flagging for buyers who prefer physical media: Sony has publicly confirmed it will halt physical disc production in January 2028. God of War Laufey, launching in February 2027, should have a physical PS5 edition — but it sits close enough to Sony's self-imposed deadline that it's worth watching for pre-order confirmation. A former Santa Monica developer noted in earlier reporting that the studio had explicitly confirmed Laufey "will be available on disc," reportedly to address fan concern following Sony's disc news.

Why This Release Window Matters

February 16, 2027 is a calculated landing spot. It follows the holiday 2026 window, places Laufey in a typically quieter early-year period, and gives Santa Monica a clear runway from the June reveal. The last major PS5 exclusive to launch in that slot was Returnal in 2021; Sony has historically used the first quarter of the year for titles that don't need to compete with the November–December rush.

The announcement of a Kratos-led follow-up changes how Laufey reads strategically. It's not a franchise pivot away from Kratos — it's a deliberate expansion of what God of War can be, with Faye's story serving as the connective tissue between what came before and wherever the series goes next.
