The Elder Scrolls Online, developed by ZeniMax Online Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks, launched Season One: Return of the Thieves Guild on July 8. Previously centered on Hew's Bane, the Thieves Guild relocates to Glenumbra, one of the Daggerfall Covenant's key trading hubs. A recent update folded the Thieves Guild content into the base game instead of keeping it as paid DLC, and Season One's new story is playable by everyone — no ESO Plus subscription or extra purchase required.

The Story — A Gang War in Glenumbra
The Thieves Guild, once headquartered in Hew's Bane, is trying to establish a new chapter in Glenumbra. The catch: rivalries among the region's local gangs have flared up because of a dangerous new organization threatening them all. Players help the guild's new leader, Quen, unite the gangs. Season One ships with eight new story quests, finder quests, and daily quests and heists based out of the Outlaws Refuge in Daggerfall.
How Much Is Actually Free — Even Hew's Bane Is Open Now
Back at Season Zero, ZeniMax already made the original Thieves Guild questline and Hew's Bane accessible without ESO Plus. With Season One added on top, new and returning players can now follow the entire Thieves Guild story from the start at no extra cost. The update also brings a Glenumbra zone refresh — including two new banks — and a new consumable item, Somnal Powder.
Why ESO Moved to a "Season" Structure
Rather than selling one large expansion per year, ESO's recent updates have shifted to releasing content in sequential "seasons." The strategy: make already-owned popular content like the Thieves Guild free to pull players back in, then roll out season content — a Sheogorath-focused questline, the Crimson Veldt zone, and more — on a staggered schedule.
Community Reaction and an Industry Wildcard
Forum sentiment is largely positive about Season One being entirely free, though some players have criticized the staggered rollout — the Sheogorath questline arrives three weeks after the season launch, and Crimson Veldt doesn't even have a confirmed date yet. The launch also lands two days after Microsoft's Xbox division announced roughly 3,200 layoffs across its games business on July 6, with Blizzard and ZeniMax reported as heavily affected — fueling community concern about the studio's capacity to deliver on the rest of the season.
