The First HD-2D Final Fantasy Is Here — And It's Turn-Based
On June 9, 2026, Square Enix dropped one of the biggest gaming announcements of the summer: Final Fantasy Resonance, the very first HD-2D game in the mainline Final Fantasy franchise. Revealed during the Nintendo Direct showcase, it combines pixel art aesthetics with modern production values and, most significantly, brings back classic turn-based combat for the first time in decades.
The game launches October 22, 2026 on Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and the Microsoft Store.
""Imagine what classic FINAL FANTASY could have become if pixel art kept evolving."

Story — Protecting the Eight Crystals

Final Fantasy Resonance is based on the story from the first season of the now-shuttered mobile game Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius, but it has been extensively rebuilt as a full-fledged console RPG — not a direct port.
You play as Rain, a highly regarded knight in the kingdom of Grandshelt, whose father is the king. A mysterious warrior shrouded in darkness seeks to shatter the eight crystals that sustain the world, and Rain sets out to protect them alongside his companions:
- ▶Rain — Elite knight of Grandshelt
- ▶Lasswell — Rain's loyal right-hand man
- ▶Lid — Talented engineer following in Cid's footsteps
- ▶Fina — A summoner who lost her memory
You'll travel across multiple continents on an overworld, use chocobos and airships, and explore optional dungeons to unlock Espers for Fina to summon in battle.
Turn-Based Combat Returns
For the first time in decades, a mainline Final Fantasy game is built entirely around classic turn-order combat rather than the Active Time Battle (ATB) or action-based systems of recent entries.
Key combat features:
- ▶Turn-order system: No ATB gauge — strategic positioning and turn management are key
- ▶Esper summoning: Fina can summon powerful Espers obtained through dungeon exploration
- ▶Vision system: Equip legendary FF characters onto party members to gain their abilities
- ▶Job-like progression: Visions level up separately as you use them in battle
The game uses the Brave Exvius soundtrack alongside 33 brand-new songs composed exclusively for Resonance.
The Vision System — Every Final Fantasy Hero In One Game
The Vision System is the centerpiece of Final Fantasy Resonance's gameplay identity. By equipping Visions — spiritual echoes of beloved characters from across the franchise — onto your party members, you unlock their unique abilities and can level them up like a Job system.

Confirmed Visions at launch:
| Character | Original Game |
|---|---|
| Warrior of Light | FINAL FANTASY I |
| Terra | FINAL FANTASY VI |
| Cloud | FINAL FANTASY VII |
| Zidane | FINAL FANTASY IX |
| Shantotto | FINAL FANTASY XI |
| Y'shtola | FINAL FANTASY XIV |
Vision-exclusive characters from the Brave Exvius universe will also be available. New Visions are found at Vision Shrines — optional dungeon areas that trigger cutscenes and unlock characters.

Classic Final Fantasy touchstones reimagined in HD-2D include:
- ▶World map exploration with visible terrain changes
- ▶Chocobo riding across open fields
- ▶Airship travel between continents
- ▶Dramatic story cutscenes with cinematic camera angles
Community Reaction
The announcement trailer from the Square Enix YouTube channel surpassed 219,000 views within days. Nintendo of America's upload reached over 161,000 views.
Community reception has been overwhelmingly positive. The combination of turn-based combat returning and iconic characters from across the franchise has generated enormous enthusiasm among long-time fans.
From an IGN hands-on preview after playing three hours of the game:
""Final Fantasy Resonance is the first turn-based FF in decades, and we are fired up after playing a couple hours of it."
— IGN Preview
Some concern has been raised about the game's origin as a mobile title, but early hands-on coverage has been reassuring, with reviewers noting that no knowledge of Brave Exvius is required.
