The Developer — The Coalition

The Coalition is Microsoft's dedicated Gears of War studio, based in Vancouver, Canada. The team shipped Gears of War 4 and Gears 5, steadily refining the franchise while building toward something bigger. E-Day represents their most ambitious work yet.

Built on Unreal Engine 5, E-Day leverages Lumen global illumination and Nanite virtual geometry to deliver visuals that are a generational leap over anything the series has shown before. After seven years since Gears 5, this is The Coalition's full showcase of what they're capable of.

Story — The Day That Changed Everything

Emergence Day is the defining tragedy of the Gears universe — the moment the Locust Horde burst from the ground and wiped out billions in a single day. It's the event every Gears game references, mourns, and builds upon. Now, for the first time, players will experience it directly.

The Setting: Kalona

Gameplay — Familiar Bones, New Movement

Campaign: 4-Player Co-op

E-Day's campaign supports up to 4-player co-op. The story follows Marcus and Dom, but additional players can join alongside them as they fight through the chaos of Emergence Day.

New Movement System

For the first time in the series, E-Day introduces jump, slide, and vault mechanics. The iconic cover-based combat remains the foundation, but these new movement options open up more vertical and dynamic engagements.

GamePeak Verdict & What to Do Now

Gears of War: E-Day is exactly the prequel the community has wanted — E-Day itself, Marcus and Dom at their youngest, and the birth of the Chain Lancer. The Coalition has had seven years to make their magnum opus, and the UE5 visuals suggest they've used that time well.

With the free August open beta coming first, there's no reason not to try it before the October 6 launch.
