Game director Hugo Martin teased in a February video update that an expansion was in development and described it as "huge" and "basically like a sequel" to the base game. With the reveal now here, it's clear he wasn't exaggerating.

Story — The Slayer Falls Into His Own Mind

Revelations picks up with the Slayer wounded and betrayed, cast into a purgatory that exists within his own mind. Based on gameplay shown, this may represent the Slayer's first time in hell within The Dark Ages' timeline placement.

id Software's official synopsis:

"

"Wounded and betrayed, the Slayer is thrust into a merciless purgatory only escapable by confronting haunting truths and forging new strength with the help of a mysterious ally. He must ascend from the prison of his mind and fight an abomination of the gods to set his followers on the path to freedom." — id Software official synopsis

Where the base game centered on the shield and defensive, deliberate combat, Revelations shifts the dynamic with the Chain Spear, leaning into aggression and mobility as the defining new combat pillar.

New Weapon — The Chain Spear

The Chain Spear replaces the shield as the Slayer's signature tool in Revelations. It's an entirely new combat system built around mastery and momentum.

Chain Spear FunctionDescription
Bullet ParryDeflect incoming projectiles with the spear
Javelin ThrowLaunch it at enemies from a distance
Grapple HookYank enemies toward you, or pull yourself to them
Melee ChainClose-range chain attacks

The Chain Spear works in combination with returning weapons — the Super Shotgun, Skullcrusher, and Chainshot are all confirmed to be compatible — opening up entirely new combat combinations. id Software describes it as a system that "rewards mastery with enhanced power and mobility."

GamePeak Verdict

Revelations is shaping up to be exactly what Hugo Martin promised — not a bite-sized DLC, but an expansion that functions more like a sequel. The Chain Spear alone represents a meaningful mechanical departure from the base game's shield-centric design, and the return of Khan Maykr alongside new story content gives lore-invested players plenty to dig into.

If you own the Premium Edition, there's nothing to do but wait for July 7. If you're on the base game, $19.99 for what Martin described as "huge" and "basically like a sequel" is straightforward value. And even if you skip the DLC entirely, Ripatorium 3.0 still lands for free.

DOOM: The Dark Ages — Revelations releases July 7, 2026 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
