Almost three years after its August 2023 launch, The Game Kitchen continues to support its gothic Metroidvania with no price tag attached. The studio did the same with the 2024 Mea Culpa DLC, and it's done it again here.

"

"Blasphemous 2, a great indie game fueled by inspiration from Castlevania and Bloodborne, came out almost three years ago, but its developers at The Game Kitchen aren't finished with it quite yet." — Game Informer (June 6, 2026)

The New Area: A Vast Gothic Castle

The centrepiece of The Third Sin is a sprawling, labyrinthine gothic castle — a former refuge for Cvstodia's nobles, now shattered by the arrival of The Miracle.

The Game Kitchen puts the scale in perspective: this new area is a quarter of the total combined size of the Blasphemous 2 base game and the Mea Culpa DLC maps. For a free expansion, that's a substantial addition.

Areas to explore:

  • Meandering castle halls
  • Twisting towers
  • A cavernous library
  • Dark underground crypts

The castle also houses the boss replay gallery, giving players a reason to revisit every corner of the new map.

New Weapon: Blade-Tipped Whip

The Penitent One's arsenal grows with the Blade-tipped Whip — exactly what it sounds like: a whip with a blade on the end.

It introduces a range-focused fighting style with wide-reaching standard attacks and powerful special attack options that complement or contrast with the existing weapon roster. Game Rant described it as "playing like something straight out of Castlevania."

Familiars: Three New Companions

The Third Sin introduces a Familiar system — three magical entities that accompany The Penitent One through the castle. According to The Game Kitchen, they provide support in both combat and exploration, making them particularly useful for navigating the maze-like new environment.

Specific abilities for each Familiar are left for players to discover in-game.

Boss Replay Gallery

Beyond the single new boss, The Third Sin gives players access to a full gallery of every boss from Blasphemous 2 — all re-challengeable from within the castle. This means:

  • Test the new whip against old encounters
  • Use Familiars as back-up in previously solo fights
  • Chase new outfit unlocks or achievements you may have missed

It's a smart addition that gives existing completionists fresh targets without requiring entirely new content to justify the replay.

Community Reaction

Response has been overwhelmingly positive. The combination of a surprise announcement and immediate availability is a move fans rarely experience, and the free price tag makes it impossible to argue against.

"

"Having it be a gift from the developer makes it all the sweeter." — PCGamesN (June 6, 2026)

For players who haven't tried Blasphemous 2, this is also a nudge: the base game now includes two major free DLC expansions, representing considerably more content than at launch.

GamePeak Take

The Third Sin is a case study in how to handle post-launch support. The Game Kitchen didn't charge for this. They didn't announce it weeks in advance and build up hype. They announced it and dropped it in the same breath, with meaningful content attached.

A new weapon, three companions, a significant map expansion, and a boss rush mode — for free — is a generous package by any measure. If you own Blasphemous 2, there is no reason not to install it today. If you don't, this is a strong signal that The Game Kitchen treats its community well.

Update and return to Cvstodia.
