Patch 35.6 Drops With a Prison Break
Hearthstone Patch 35.6 went live on June 2, 2026, and it came with far more than a routine balance pass.
The headline: Escape from Violet Hold, Hearthstone's next full expansion, officially announced for July 7, 2026, along with a free login Legendary card, two new in-game events with stacked free rewards, Battlegrounds Anomalies making their return, and Arena's Herald card prevalence getting walked back.
New Expansion: Escape from Violet Hold (July 7)
Story
Dalaran's maximum-security prison, the Violet Hold, has never seen a successful escape — until now. Vanessa VanCleef, daughter of Defias Brotherhood leader Edwin VanCleef, is assembling the worst of the worst for one last job: break everyone out.
Standing in the way is a newly appointed Warden: Maiev Shadowsong, who transforms the Hold into a shifting arcane maze the moment she takes the post. Getting out won't be easy.
Expansion Snapshot
| Field | Details |
|---|---|
| Expansion Name | Escape from Violet Hold |
| Cards | 135 new collectible cards |
| New Keyword | Prepare |
| Launch Date | July 7, 2026 at 10:00 AM PDT |
| Pre-Release Brawl | June 30, 2026 |
| Pre-Order | Available now through July 7 |
New Keyword: Prepare
The Prepare keyword introduces a new layer of strategic depth by letting you front-load your future turns.
How it works:
- ▶Drag a Prepare card onto your deck to spend your remaining mana
- ▶The card's cost is reduced by that amount plus one
- ▶The card returns to your hand, ready to be played in a future turn for much less mana
Example: You end your turn with 3 mana left. Prepare a card → that card costs 4 less when you play it later. Combine this with expensive minions or combo pieces for explosive tempo swings your opponent can't anticipate.
Vanessa VanCleef, the free login Legendary, is the flagship Prepare card.
Legendary Rulebreaker Cards
Each class gets one Legendary that breaks a fundamental Hearthstone rule:
| Class | Rulebreaker | Rule Broken |
|---|---|---|
| Warrior (shared) | Chainbreaker Hogger | Duplicates all Legendaries in your deck at game start — run two of the same Legendary |
| Death Knight | Blood Doctor Thal'ena | Unlocks a second Hero Power: Vampyr's Kiss (powered by Corpses) |
| Demon Hunter | Irida Sinseeker | Sends your entire deck to the Void; draw two cards per turn |
Other classes have Rulebreakers not listed above — the full card reveal schedule runs June 9 through launch.
What Changed in Patch 35.6
Before vs. After: Key Changes
| Area | Before 35.6 | After 35.6 |
|---|---|---|
| Battlegrounds Anomalies | Not in rotation | 7 new + 17 returning + 5 updated Anomalies active |
| Arena Herald cards | Elevated appearance rate (intentional at launch) | Reduced — 1 fewer Herald per Legendary bucket, overall rate lowered |
| Free Legendary | None | Vanessa the Ringleader (login reward, starting June 2) |
| Expansion countdown | Waiting | Escape from Violet Hold announced for July 7 |
Battlegrounds Updates
Anomalies are back — these are tavern-transforming effects that apply to all players from the start of each game, adding a wildcard element that makes every match feel different. The patch brings:
- ▶7 brand-new Anomalies
- ▶17 returning Anomalies
- ▶5 returning Anomalies with updates
Minion, tavern spell, and trinket balance adjustments accompany the Anomaly return, tuned for Season 13's second half.
Arena Updates
The Herald card feedback loop has been addressed. When Herald launched, its appearance rate was boosted deliberately to highlight the new mechanic. With the meta established, Blizzard is dialing it back:
""Herald drafts can be a bit too strong, leading to snowballing games that are not as fun to play against, so we're reducing how often these cards appear. Specifically, we're reducing the number of Herald cards in Legendary buckets that contain Herald Legendaries by one and replacing it with a non-Herald card, as well as lowering the overall appearance rate of Herald cards to be in line with other class cards." — Blizzard
