The Chase Item System Just Changed Permanently
On May 28, 2026, Blizzard Entertainment published the patch notes for the Diablo IV 3.1 PTR, opening the door to one of the most significant item system overhauls since the game launched.
The headline: in Season 14, every Unique item in the game can become Mythic.
The PTR runs June 2–9, 2026, PC (Battle.net) only, giving players a week to test Season 14's changes before they go live. The full note from Blizzard's announcement:

Mythic Uniques 3.0 — Complete System Redesign
The old Mythic system worked on scarcity: a handful of specific items (Grandfather, Harlequin Crest, Andariel's Visage) could drop as Mythic rarity, which guaranteed affixes were rolled at maximum values. Only six or so items were eligible, and the entire late-game was optimized around getting them.
That changes in 3.1.
| Mechanic | Before 3.1 | After 3.1 |
|---|---|---|
| What is Mythic? | A separate item rarity | A modifiable item quality |
| Which items can be Mythic? | ~6 specific Unique items | Any Unique in the game |
| How to get a crafted Mythic | Not possible | Horadric Cube + Pandemonium Fragments |
| Unique Power on Mythic | Fixed at max | Max roll + 30% bonus |
| Affixes on new Mythics | Fixed, unchanging | 1 fixed base affix + 3 randomized |
| Can be Horadric Cube modified? | No | Yes (Focused/Chaotic Reroll) |
| How many crafted Mythics equipped? | N/A | One crafted Mythic at a time |
| Multiple dropped Mythics? | N/A | Can wear multiple drop-found Mythics |
The old Mythics — now called Iconic Mythics — remain in the game but cannot be modified in the Horadric Cube. Blizzard has toned down the most dominant ones to be competitive with the newly craftable options rather than strictly better.
Crafted Mythic Uniques follow standard Unique affix rules: one guaranteed fixed affix plus three randomized rolls. Unlike Iconic Mythics, they can be Focused or Chaotic Rerolled using the Horadric Cube. This makes them both accessible and customizable — but not guaranteed to be perfectly rolled on your first craft.
How to Get Pandemonium Fragments
Pandemonium Fragments are the new seasonal currency used to upgrade Uniques to Mythic in the Horadric Cube. You'll earn them from:
- ▶Progressing through the Seasonal Reputation Board
- ▶Defeating Corrupted Reaper, the new seasonal Lair Boss
- ▶Completing Resplendent Caches
- ▶Seasonal Rank progression
The Corrupted Reaper is the single best source of both Pandemonium Fragments and direct Mythic Unique drops. Players must reach Torment 1 to access the boss during the PTR. Post-launch, completing the seasonal campaign unlocks it.
Pandemonium Rupture — The Season 14 Mechanic
Season 14's overarching seasonal activity is Pandemonium Rupture: tears between Sanctuary and Pandemonium open across the world map, offering a new wave-based activity loop.
The Lair Boss encounter triggers at the end of the seasonal activity chain. The loop is:
- 1Find and enter a Pandemonium Rupture
- 2Complete the activity for Seasonal Reputation and materials
- 3Use accumulated Greater Layer Keys to challenge Corrupted Reaper
- 4Earn Pandemonium Fragments and Mythic drops

Solo Self-Found Mode — A Permanent Addition
Solo Self-Found (SSF) joins Diablo IV as a permanent seasonal game mode — no trading, no partying, no outside gear. Everything you use, you found yourself.
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Trading | Disabled |
| Party play | Disabled |
| Dark Citadel access | Not available in SSF |
| Couch co-op | Not available in SSF |
| Once chosen | Cannot be reversed during the season |
| After season ends | Character moves to Eternal Realm with full features |
| Leaderboard | Dedicated SSF Tower leaderboard |
| Hardcore | SSF + Hardcore combination supported |
This is one of the most-requested features in Diablo IV's history. The addition of a dedicated SSF leaderboard alongside it makes the mode a genuine competitive ladder rather than just a self-imposed challenge.
SSF is a permanent choice for the duration of the season. If you start a character in SSF mode, you cannot switch it to shared economy until the season ends and the character migrates to Eternal. Think carefully before committing.
Horadric Cube & War Plans Upgrades
Horadric Cube Additions:
- ▶Unique items can now use Focused Reroll and Chaotic Reroll recipes
- ▶Unique Amulets and non-Ancestral Uniques can now have their Unique Power rerolled
- ▶Chaotic Tuning Prisms now have a chance to provide All Resistances
- ▶These recipes cost additional materials beyond the base recipe
War Plans Party Sync:
Party members can now synchronize War Plans. When the party leader selects a War Plan, all members vote to accept. Cost: 2 Marks of Eldru to the party leader. All players' boards sync to the selected plan regardless of individual progression state. This finally solves the friction of friends trying to coordinate seasonal activities while on different War Plan configurations.
Community Reaction
""I've wanted a specific Unique to be Mythic for two seasons now and couldn't get it to drop that way. The ability to craft it is going to completely change how I approach the season." — Diablo IV Forums
""SSF leaderboards are a game-changer. There's finally a way to prove your build purely on self-found gear, and that feels meaningful in a way the shared economy ladder never did." — Reddit r/diablo4
""The nerf to Iconic Mythics stings a bit, but making them competitive with crafted Mythics rather than strictly dominant is the right call for long-term build diversity." — Icy Veins community
