Xbox announces Fable will slip from fall 2026 to February 2027. The game is in great shape, Xbox insists — but GTA 6's shadow looms large over the decision.

Fable Delayed to February 2027 — Xbox Steps Aside for GTA 6 and a Packed Holiday Lineup

Fable will not be arriving this fall. Xbox confirmed on Friday, May 29 that Playground Games' long-awaited open-world action RPG has been pushed from its previously planned fall 2026 window to February 2027. The studio insists the game is in excellent shape — but the presence of Grand Theft Auto VI on the 2026 release calendar makes the reasoning clear enough.

Xbox's Official Statement

The official Xbox X account posted the announcement with the following message:

"

"This year is packed with incredible games for Xbox players to enjoy, from Halo: Campaign Evolved, Gears of War: E-Day and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 to Control Resonant, Star Wars: Galactic Racer and Grand Theft Auto VI. In order to plan our game launches through the holidays, in a way that works best for players, we're moving Fable to February 2027 so it can have the dedicated moment it deserves. We're excited to be giving players a major new look at Fable, as well as our broader lineup, at Xbox Games Showcase on June 7."

Xbox Chief Content Officer Matt Booty reinforced the message on the Official Xbox Podcast:

"

"The game is in great shape. The team feels really good. We're excited about where the game is. We want to make sure that that game has a window all to its own, so we are going to move it from this fall to February. We really just want it to have its own moment to shine."

The GTA 6 Elephant in the Room

The announcement carefully names GTA 6 among its listed titles — unusual for a delay statement involving a competing product. The numbers behind the decision are telling.

GTA VI commands purchase intent more than six times higher than Fable. Industry analyst Mat Piscatella noted that with the current economic climate forcing gamers to make harder choices about spending, releasing Fable directly into GTA 6's orbit would have been a significant commercial risk.

Reports from as recently as April suggested Playground Games was internally "worried" about GTA 6's impact — though the official Fable account had publicly maintained it was still on track for autumn.

⚠️WARNING

Third delay: Fable was announced in 2020 with an implied 2025 target, pushed to 2026, and now confirmed for February 2027. No specific date within February has been announced. The game will have been in announced development for over six years by the time it launches.

Community Reaction

"

"Honestly the right call. Launching against GTA 6 would have been commercial suicide. Give it room to breathe in February and it has a real shot." — Reddit r/xboxone

"

"Announced in 2020. Launching in 2027. Seven years. This is beyond Duke Nukem territory at this point." — Reddit r/gaming

"

"If the game needs more time, give it more time. I'd rather wait and get something great than rush it out the door. February is actually a solid launch window." — X (Twitter) reaction

What Is Fable?

For players unfamiliar with the franchise: Fable is a beloved British RPG series originally developed by Lionhead Studios, whose three mainline entries were defined by moral choice systems, dark fairytale world-building, and a signature wit. Lionhead was shuttered by Microsoft in 2016.

Playground Games — the studio behind the Forza Horizon series — picked up the franchise and has been developing a full reboot for several years.

  • World: Vibrant, dangerous open-world Albion with dark fairytale aesthetics
  • Core mechanic: Reputation system that evolves based on player choices
  • Perspective: Third-person open-world action RPG
  • Platforms: Xbox Series X|S, PS5, PC via Steam and Microsoft Store, Game Pass

PS5 confirmed: PS5 support was officially confirmed at Xbox's Developer Direct in January 2026 — a significant shift for what was historically an Xbox-exclusive franchise. Game Pass subscribers will get Fable on day one at no additional cost.

Xbox Games Showcase June 7: Major New Look

Despite the delay, Xbox promised a major new look at Fable during the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7. This will be the most substantial public showing of the game to date, expected to include extended gameplay footage and new details about its systems.

Xbox's 2026 Lineup Without Fable

The delay doesn't leave Xbox's year empty. The 2026 lineup still includes significant titles.

The Bigger Picture

Fable's delay is a market decision, not a quality crisis. A February 2027 launch avoids GTA 6, the holiday rush, and the seasonal noise that buries smaller launches — and gives Playground Games one final stretch to polish what Booty calls a game already in "great shape."

The June 7 showcase will be the moment of truth. If the footage holds up, the extra wait will look prescient. If it doesn't, no amount of strategic scheduling will save the narrative from "seven years and still not ready."

Either way, February 2027 just became one of gaming's most anticipated dates.
