LumenTale: Memories of Trey Is Out Now
After years of crowdfunding support and a journey from Kickstarter project to full Team17 publishing deal, LumenTale: Memories of Trey officially launched on PC via Steam and Nintendo Switch on May 26–27, 2026. Developed by indie studio Beehive Studios and published by Team17, the game is one of the most ambitious independent entries in the monster-collecting RPG genre this year.
The monster-collecting genre has long been dominated by Pokémon, but LumenTale isn't just another imitation — it brings genuine structural innovations to the formula, including larger-scale team battles and a living world with emotional stakes.

Story — A World Torn by Civil War
LumenTale is set in Talea, a continent fractured by centuries of conflict. After the Emperor died without naming an heir between his twin sons, a devastating civil war erupted between the northern faction Logos and the southern Mythos. The people lived in fear — until an elite group called the Lumen rose to become Talea's dedicated protectors.
You play as Trey, a young man who awakens with no memory of his past. Armed with a device called the Holoken, Trey ventures across Talea to uncover the truth about his identity, encountering magical creatures called Animon along the way. Powered by a mysterious energy called Anivis, these creatures can influence emotions and bond directly to the souls of living beings.
It's a surprisingly mature backdrop for a creature-collecting game, and one that gives the world more texture than the genre typically offers.
The Animon System — 140 Species, 5 Emotional Attributes
The heart of LumenTale is collecting and battling with Animon. There are over 140 known species with 13 elemental types, each belonging to one of five emotional attribute groups that shape their combat role.
Animon Emotional Attributes
| Attribute | Emotion | Battle Role |
|---|---|---|
| Sereum | Serenity | Boosts critical hit chance |
| Horrens | Fear | High burst — potential one-hit KOs |
| Joy Attribute | Joy | Team synergy and buffing |
| Sorrow Attribute | Sorrow | Healing and debuffs |
| Fury Attribute | Anger | Multi-hit attack chains |
Unlike a simple type-advantage matrix, LumenTale's emotional system encourages thinking about team composition holistically — which Animon pairs best with which emotion, and how to exploit an opponent's emotional weaknesses in sequence.
Battle Scale
One of the game's most distinctive features is its battle scale options:
- ▶Standard 1v1 turn-based duels
- ▶4v4 team battles for PvE story content and PvP
- ▶Supports both online and local PvP
""The 4v4 battles are genuinely tactical. You can't just spam your strongest Animon — team synergy matters and opponents who understand the emotion system will outplay raw power every time." — r/JRPG on Reddit
Early Adopter Bonus (until June 25): Purchasing during launch month grants exclusive Anispace furniture, 30 Standard Bilias, 10 Velox Bilias, 5 Lost Bilias, Memostones, all starter Animon cards, and a holographic Lampecko card.
The Anispace — Your Living Base of Operations
Beyond battles, LumenTale offers a secondary living space called The Anispace — a realm that "exists and doesn't exist" simultaneously, detached from the main world.
- ▶Captured Animon live here when not in your active party
- ▶Train Animon for battle and build bonds with them over time
- ▶Customize the space with furniture crafted or purchased from vendors
- ▶Stronger bonds unlock bonuses in combat
- ▶Cook food at fountains throughout the world to support your Animon
- ▶Craft items from gathered resources
The Anispace is a meaningful addition that turns Animon from battle pieces into companions, giving casual players a relaxed progression loop separate from the main adventure.

Trading System — Three Ways to Complete Your Collection
LumenTale offers three distinct trading options:
- 1Animon Trade Station — seek specific Animon through a community-driven marketplace
- 2Direct friend trades — one-on-one exchanges with friends online
- 3Community trading — broader public trades with the player base
Lost variant Animon (rare alternate forms) make trading a significant long-term activity for completionists.

Community Reactions
""I backed this on Kickstarter three years ago and nearly forgot about it. Just started playing and the world is far richer than I expected. The emotional storytelling is genuinely affecting — this isn't just another Pokémon clone." — Kickstarter backer, Steam review
""The Anispace housing system is more interactive than Pokémon Home ever was. I spent two hours decorating before I even thought about progressing the story." — r/NintendoSwitch
""4v4 battles feel like a more strategic version of Pokémon doubles. If you sleep on this because 'it's not Pokémon' you'll be missing out." — Steam Curator
Verdict — A Genuine Challenger to the Genre Crown
LumenTale: Memories of Trey is the product of years of passion and a genuine creative vision. Its emotional attribute system, large-scale team battles, and robust Anispace customization set it meaningfully apart from both Pokémon and most other creature-collection games.
Whether it will build a lasting audience remains to be seen — but as a launch product, it punches well above its indie weight class. Fans of the genre who've been waiting for something fresh should give it a serious look.
Available now on Steam (search "LumenTale: Memories of Trey") and Nintendo eShop. Early Adopter bonus ends June 25, 2026.
