The Next Game From the Octopath Traveler Team
The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales is the latest release from Square Enix's Asano Team — the studio behind Octopath Traveler, Bravely Default, and Triangle Strategy. It launches globally on June 18, 2026 for Nintendo Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Windows, and Steam, with Korean pre-orders opening May 28, 2026.
The game marks the first time Square Enix's acclaimed HD-2D visual style — which blends 2D pixel art characters with richly detailed 3D environments — has been applied to an action RPG format rather than a turn-based system.

Story — One Adventurer, Four Ages of History
In The Adventures of Elliot, you play as Elliot, an adventurer who sets out with his fairy companion Faie to lift a curse placed on Princess Huria of the Huzer Kingdom. The only way to break it: pass through the Doorway of Time and traverse four distinct ages of a continent's history spanning one thousand years.
The world is Filibuildia, a vast continent overrun by Beast Tribes and filled with ancient secrets. As Elliot and Faie move through each era, they encounter different conflicts, people, and threats — and discover that the danger threatening their present is woven deeply into the past.
The Four Ages
| Age | Setting & Theme |
|---|---|
| Age of Safekeeping (Present) | Elliot's home era. The kingdom depends entirely on the princess's protective magic |
| Age of Reconstruction | Civilization collapsed — humanity cowers in the ruins, having lost both magic and hope |
| Age of Magic | The height of human prosperity, where magical research underpins all of society |
| Age of Budding | The dawn of human civilization — an era defined by the desire for peaceful coexistence |
Each age has its own cast, world state, and moral questions. The narrative weaves them together as Elliot uncovers how events across a millennium connect to the curse threatening his kingdom.
Gameplay — HD-2D Meets Real-Time Action
Combat System
The Asano Team's signature is deliberate, layered JRPG systems — but The Adventures of Elliot breaks from that tradition with a fully real-time action combat system:
- ▶Elliot equips up to two weapons simultaneously and switches between them dynamically during combat
- ▶Battles against Beast Tribes are direct and reactive, rewarding skillful timing
- ▶Faie's fairy magic serves as a tactical support toolkit, enabling crowd control, healing, and situational effects
- ▶Dungeon exploration integrates combat, puzzles, and environmental traversal
Co-op Support
The Adventures of Elliot supports local 2-player co-op on Nintendo Switch 2 and PS5, making it one of the few HD-2D titles designed for cooperative play from the ground up.
""The idea of HD-2D in an action game sounded risky, but the E3 demo footage shows something genuinely exciting. The visual style translates even more dramatically when the environments are reacting to real-time combat." — r/JRPG community preview
The HD-2D Visual Legacy
| Title | Year | Genre |
|---|---|---|
| Octopath Traveler | 2018 | Turn-based RPG |
| Triangle Strategy | 2022 | Tactical RPG |
| Live A Live (Remake) | 2022 | Turn-based RPG |
| Octopath Traveler II | 2023 | Turn-based RPG |
| The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales | 2026 | Action RPG (first time) |
The shift to action gameplay represents the biggest structural departure for HD-2D yet. Whether the visual philosophy translates as effectively to a real-time format will be one of the key questions for reviews.

Community Reactions
""The Asano Team making an action RPG in HD-2D is genuinely exciting. After Octopath II I was worried they'd stay in their lane forever — this is a bold move and I'm here for it." — r/JRPG
""The Collector's Edition desk clock is the best physical bonus I've seen in years. It's not just a figurine — it's actually functional and the diorama design is beautiful." — Nintendo Switch 2 fan community
""Four time periods, each with its own cast and conflict, tied together through one protagonist? That's the kind of ambitious JRPG narrative structure that only the Asano Team seems to attempt consistently." — GameFAQs forum

Why This One Matters
The Asano Team has a track record of delivering ambitious JRPGs that outperform their announcement hype. The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales brings three notable firsts: the first HD-2D action RPG, the first Asano Team title designed for co-op, and the most narratively expansive structure the team has attempted.
Pre-orders open tomorrow. Given the Collector's Edition supply constraints and the Asano Team's history of selling out physical editions, JRPG collectors in Korea and globally should act early.
