The Wait Is Almost Over — 007 First Light Launches Tomorrow

After years of anticipation since its original reveal as "Project 007" in 2020, IO Interactive's 007 First Light is finally ready to deploy. The game launches May 27, 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, and Xbox App) — a bold James Bond origin story from the studio behind the acclaimed Hitman: World of Assassination trilogy.

The game was originally slated for March 27 before a two-month delay, but IO Interactive's CEO Hakan Abrak confirmed the extra time was used to polish performance and stability across all platforms. By all signs, tomorrow's launch is on track.

Story — Becoming Bond Before He Was Bond

007 First Light doesn't start with the invincible superspy we know from cinema. It begins with a young James Bond — 26 years old, a Naval Air Crewman who hasn't yet earned his license to kill.

After a heroic act draws MI6's attention, Bond is recruited into the newly revived Double-0 Program. Assigned under the reluctant mentorship of veteran field agent John Greenway (played by Lennie James), he's sent on what appears to be a contained mission: track down rogue agent 009. But when that op ends in tragedy, Bond and Greenway find themselves unraveling a deep conspiracy aimed at the British State itself.

Irish actor Patrick Gibson plays the young Bond, with a cast that includes Gemma Chan, Lenny Kravitz, Priyanga Burford, and more. The game's theme song is performed by Lana Del Rey.

Confirmed locations: The Grand Carpathian Hotel in Slovakia's High Tatra Mountains, a corporate gala at a Kensington museum in London, and locations in Africa — plus more kept secret to avoid spoilers.

Gameplay — IO's Creative Approach to Bond

IO Interactive has been clear: 007 First Light is not "Hitman with Bond." While the DNA of meticulous, systemic design is present, the game builds its own identity around four interlocking gameplay pillars:

Four Core Systems

SystemDescription
SpycraftEavesdrop on conversations, pickpocket key items, find environmental clues to unlock new routes
Bond's InstinctLure enemies, bluff your way past guards, sharpen focus for precision in combat
Q Branch GadgetsHack systems, cut locks, create distractions, execute silent takedowns
CombatFast, fluid close-quarters melee blended with ranged gunplay and vehicle combat

Unlike Hitman's purely sandbox structure, 007 First Light blends linear narrative set pieces with mission-level freedom. Missions can be approached quietly through stealth and social manipulation, or loudly through direct confrontation — or a mix of both.

A Franchise in the Making

IO Interactive has spoken openly about positioning 007 First Light as the foundation of a larger Bond gaming franchise — not a one-off release. With a younger Bond at the center and story threads left deliberately open, the structure mirrors how the Hitman trilogy evolved: each entry building on the last, with an overarching narrative that rewards patience.

Whether First Light lives up to its enormous promise is something we'll all find out tomorrow.
