Dark Souls Remastered punishes players who miss the right order and timing. Skipped NPC questlines are permanently lost within a playthrough, and entering late-game areas without key items multiplies the difficulty several times over. This guide gives first-run players the core information they need.

1. Optimal Progression Route

Dark Souls is non-linear, but this sequence minimizes difficulty spikes and maximizes item/NPC access:

First Half (Undead Burg to Anor Londo)

  1. 1Firelink Shrine — starting hub
  2. 2Undead Burg — first area; ring the first Bell by defeating Gargoyles
  3. 3Undead Parish — Bell Gargoyles boss; activate first Bell
  4. 4The DepthsBlighttown — Quelaag boss; activate second Bell
  5. 5Sen's FortressAnor Londo — Smough & Ornstein boss; obtain Lordvessel

Second Half (After Lordvessel)

  1. 1Duke's Archives — rescue Big Hat Logan (mandatory for mage builds)
  2. 2The Abyss / Four Kings — requires Covenant of Artorias ring
  3. 3Demon Ruins + Lost Izalith — requires Iron Ring
  4. 4The Catacombs + Tomb of the Giants — Nito boss
  5. 5Kiln of the First Flame — final boss

2. Missable NPC Events You Cannot Afford to Skip

These questlines are permanently lost if you miss their trigger conditions.

Solaire of Astora (The Sunbro)

  • First appearance: Bridge in Undead Burg
  • Full chain: Must be encountered in sequence across multiple areas
  • Final reward: Summoning him for the final boss is possible — and one of the game's best moments
  • Critical warning: If you trigger his questline incorrectly after the archives, he goes Hollow. The fix requires finding a hidden room in Lost Izalith — don't miss it

Siegmeyer of Catarina (The Onion Knight)

  • Chain locations: Sen's Fortress → Anor Londo → Blighttown → Lost Izalith
  • Reward per stage: Unique items culminating in a rare trophy item at the end
  • Critical warning: In Anor Londo, let him solve his puzzle himself. Do NOT clear the Silver Knights before he engages them — you'll break his questline permanently

Big Hat Logan

  • First rescue: Cage in Sen's Fortress (5,000 souls)
  • Second rescue: Duke's Archives (key in same dungeon)
  • Final reward: Ability to purchase Crystal Soul Spear — the most powerful sorcery in the game
  • Note: Missing his second rescue permanently locks out this spell in the current playthrough

Oscar of Astora

  • Location: Cell tower in Undead Burg
  • Role: Gives you your first Estus Flask — this is required to begin the game
  • Later appearance: Returns in Undead Parish as a hostile — defeating him drops the Crest of Artorias gesture

3. Essential Items and Acquisition Order

Early Game (Undead Burg through Parish)

  • Homeward Bone x10+ — buy from the Undead Merchant for 500 souls each. These let you return to your last bonfire before dying. Non-negotiable purchase.
  • Ring of the Evil Eye — restores 30 HP per enemy killed. An enormous early-game survival tool.
  • Estus Flask upgrade: Upgrade at André the Blacksmith using Fire Keeper Souls — every upgrade adds roughly +75 HP per sip

Mid Game (Blighttown through Anor Londo)

  • Covetous Gold Serpent Ring — item discovery +200; found in a treasure chest in Sen's Fortress. Essential if farming weapon upgrade materials.
  • Ring of Fog — enemies detect you at drastically reduced range. Found in the painted world (optional area off Anor Londo).

Late Game (Mandatory)

  • Covenant of Artorias Ring — obtained from defeating Sif the Great Grey Wolf in the Darkroot Garden. You cannot enter The Abyss / Four Kings without this ring. This is a hard gate.
  • Iron Ring — found in the treasure chest near the first bonfire in Demon Ruins. Required to walk on lava surfaces — without it, Demon Ruins and Lost Izalith deal massive damage per step.

4. Boss Weak Points — Top 5 Fights

Ornstein & Smough — Hardest Non-Optional Boss

  • Critical strategy: Kill Ornstein (the spear-wielder) first. If Smough absorbs him, Smough gains lightning attacks and becomes nearly unkillable.
  • Ornstein is weak to Fire and Lightning damage
  • Melee strategy: Stay close to Ornstein, roll through his spear thrusts, punish his backwards roll
  • Summon Solaire if available — he's a meaningful HP sponge for one of the two

Chaos Witch Quelaag

  • Weak to bleed and fast physical attacks
  • Never stand in front of her — the lava vomit attack is almost impossible to dodge from the front
  • Attack her exposed torso/abdomen from the side for full damage
  • Her NPC summon sign is available just before the fog door

Four Kings — DPS Race Boss

  • The fight is a pure damage race — a second king spawns before you kill the first if you're too slow
  • Recommended: Upgraded weapon (+10) and minimum Strength 25 before fighting
  • This is the one boss in the game where offense beats defense — stack damage, not protection

Pinwheel (Catacombs Boss)

  • Deliberately easy — the challenge is navigating the Catacombs to reach it
  • Weak to fire; killable in 2–3 hits with any fire-infused weapon
  • Purpose: Grants the Rite of Kindling, which lets you upgrade bonfires past 10 Estus uses

5. Efficiency Tips for Your First Run

  1. 1Don't immediately use Soul pickups: Save consumable Soul items (Humanity, Soul of a Hero, etc.) until you're about to level up. Spending them when levels cost 500 souls each wastes their value.
  1. 1Titanite Shards are available early: The Undead Parish merchant sells them in limited supply, and the Darkroot Basin enemies drop them consistently. Get your main weapon to +5 before Blighttown — the damage difference is dramatic.
  1. 1Don't kill NPCs on your first playthrough: Killing merchants removes their inventory permanently. Enemies killed are revived by using an item anyway — NPCs are not. Preserve them for questline completion.
  1. 1Homeward Bone is not a coward's tool: Using it to avoid dying and preserving your Souls is smarter than walking back. The Undead Merchant sells them indefinitely — always keep 5 on hand.

Dark Souls Remastered is one of the most information-dense games ever made. Knowing the route and key triggers separates a 40-hour frustration from a 60-hour journey where every discovery feels earned. Use this guide as a framework and let the world do the rest.
